1996-W dime???

I give up, what is a 1996-W dime anyway??? My 2005 Coins & Prices Guide listed this coin but I can't figure out what the W stands for. Any idea?

And while I am asking, why do you see matte after some dates like the 1997-P nickel?

It was part of the 1996 mint set and was pacakaged seperately with a seperate COA. The W stands for West Point and it is the only non-bullion coin ever produced by the West Point Mint.

In 1997 the mint made some coin and currency sets and in them put a nickel...proof but matted proof if I remember right.

1996-W dime was the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Roosevelt dime. It was and is found in mint 1996 sets only. If you buy a 1996 set, make sure this coin is included.

Out of all the Roosevelt dimes, it is one of value with coins in MS65 condition going for around $15 to $20 all the way up to MS68 values of $175 to $200 (depending who you talk to).

The public dumped the Mercury design soon after the death of FDR in 1945. His mug replaced a beautiful coin design.

Maybe it is time for a change for the dime too...after all, how many Roosevelt dime collectors do you know? If you are out there, please tell us why you collect Rosie's...

Because it is possible to assemble an entire set of BU and proofs relatively inexpensively.

 

Hey Porsche2207...when I opened up your image of the 1996 Roosevelt, my computer was attacked with so many pop-ups, I felt I was playing a video game as I tried to close them all. I even have pop-up blocker software and all...so I had to shut down my computer.

Are you seriously saying that pop-ups come on when clicking on the images ?

I'm here typing this post from my neighbor's computer , and I clicked on my images from imageshack and not even one pop-up came to this computer .

West Point did strike some other coins without the mint mark including clad quarters for circulation starting in 1977.

There were only 1.4 million of the '96-W dimes made and they are part of the '96 mint sets. Always be sure this dime is in them before buying these. Quality is choice to excellent. Marking is typical but not severe but there is more variation in strike. About 3% are nice gems and spectacular gems are relatively common. (~ 20% of gems).

This coin has been getting some attention in recent months and prices for it and the mint set have gone up a little.

 

Okay, the history of the FDR dime:

IN 1921, former assistant Secretary of the Navy (and Democratic Vice presidential nominee) Franklin D. Roosevelt came down with infantile paralysis, or Polio, which destroyed the nerves between his legs and his brain and made his lower limbs useless.

In late 1922, he discovered a resort in Georgia called Warm Springs, who's healing waters seemed to do some good. In 1923, he founded the Warm Springs foundation to help finance the sanitarium for poilio victims who had begun to flock to the place.

Each year, beginning in 1926, the foundation would have a nationwide fundraising drive, which was called "the march of dimes."

March of DIMES, get it?

As we all know, Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York in 1928 and President of the United States in 1932. He served in the latter capacity TWELVE years, one month and a week, a record that will NEVER be equaled.

When he died, it was decided by Congress that the founder of the march of DIMES should be honored by putting his face on a DIME.

Simple, no?

When Ronald Reagan died last year, a number of rabid Republicans wanted to take FDR's face off the dime and put Ronnie's on it.

Nancy Reagan nixed the idea.

Director of the mint Phillip Diehl wanted a way to thank long term mint set buyers in 1996 and used the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime for this purpose. Even in those days they knew that there would be dramatic changes in the coinage and the mint sets and that there would be a lot of new customers for future sets.

I went to your 1996 dime image link and as I try to close it, I had a "firework" display of pop-up-ads, even though I have sufficent software to prevent just that. It was so bad that I had to do a hard shut down, so I warned others in a bolded font about the link. SUE ME!

Well then Persh2307 there must be 2 of us. For your information I also got the pop-ups and I have a new computer with a good blocker that has never let me down. Until now. I didn't say anything until you attacked Midas with your immature and rediculous accusations.

Getting back to the subject, I have always been interested in the '96W dime. I got several sets from the start and had the dimes certified (I know, no no). Since then I grab the '96 sets whenever I come accross them at shows. Something just tells me to hold onto these. Time will tell. I know of at least 2 people that started collecting because of the '96 set.
