Hey, So I was recently given a box of coins from my grandfather. It has re sparked my interest in numismatics. In the box of coin I found this penny, It's an American 1 cent piece clearly. It is missing the final number of the date, I have looked at the coin under great magnification and its clear there was never a number there.

Any idea's on what happened to it? Is it common? Any idea's on value? Any thoughts would be great as I have no clue as do none of my books.

It looks like a grease filled die obscured the last number of the date. It's not rare or valuable but always a cool find. :thumb:

The 1943 with the missing 4 is common. Extreme die wear happened that year. Consider how steel dies to steel planchets can affect them. It would be better to find one in an earlier die state as a goal. Heavy worn cents happen on all years. The first few thousands off the dies look much better than the last several hundreds of thousands. They take better images that look like they smile instead of smirking because of old are of the die.
