The 1st and 3rd could easily be fakes, do not bid on them! The 2nd one might be real but it's damaged and in my opinion it's never good to buy a damaged coin. The only trade dollar I would buy on eBay is a graded one sold by a reputable seller. Your best bet to buying a trade dollar would be to go to a good coin shop!

    My advice is:

Do not buy raw Trade Dollars on eBay.

NEVER BUY A TRADE DOLLAR OFF EBAY! ESPECIALLY RAW!!!! Get it from a very reputable source, or PCGS/NGC certified....still you have to watch out for fake slabs

I guess i'm at the point where I shouldnt buy off ebay for the remaining coins I need. I'm working on a type set in low grade right now. Anyone know where I can get

    Half Cent
    Twenty Cent
    Trade Dollar
    Capped Quarter

From a respectable dealer for a low grade price? That will ship

Hmmm, do you not have a local dealer with whom you are familiar? If not, I would suggest you attempt making such a relationship, and let them know what you are looking for. Check for local coin club meetings, and make some contacts in that arena as well. If that is possible for you. You can create a post on CT, my want list, and see what happens as well. Good luck. Tom.

This is a good example of why a classified section feature should also be added to CT.

Theres a local dealer but I've only been there once or twice. His prices seem pretty high on things so I just didnt want to be taken advantage of since he knows I'm new to this. But thanks for the advice. I plan on attending my first coin show in a month. Maybe i can find some nice contacts there

well I would give the dealer a shot. Just explain, your not looking for anything expensive, that your are assembling a low grade type set. See if he sounds interested in assisting you. If not , move onto other venues, such as the show you are participating in, as as I have suggested as well. Good luck!

P.S. don't forget to post a "want list" here.

Not sure what you are looking for or shipping to, but Harlan J Berk has a couple of cheap ones with problems. And so does VT Coins - http://www.vtcoins.com. I have used both dealers without problems.

The first and third trade dollars could be real, but would have to be examined closely to be sure. The third coin also appears to have markings in the left obv. field. The second TD looks like a damaged piece of junk. If you don't know how to authenticate them, I would avoid buying them raw on the internet. The 1877-s is extremely common, and it's worth holding out for one in a reputable slab from a good dealer.

Dang!! I myself have been eying the trade dollars on ebay for a couple of months and have lost a few to higher bidders. Just living and learning here on CT. I think I'm starting to get it, much gratitude to y'all. :hail:

I would definitely pass on these there are so many fake Trade Dollars out there right now. Me personally if your interested in a Trade Dollar collection I would spend a little extra and buy them certified by one of the better known TPG. Just my opinion

The losses you experience by using Ebay for trade dollars will greatly exceed the slight extra cost of buying a certified coin from a reputable dealer. Here are a few.
