This was a recent purchase. The seller graded this coin at VF+ cleaned, which I think is conservative in this case. I'm happy to do business with people like this. The reverse is definitely the strong side, regarding both luster and details. It may have been lightly cleaned/dipped, but not enough to inhibit luster. The obverse, however, is quite weak in comparison. There is still some luster around the stars and lettering on the obverse, but not nearly as much as the reverse. Anyways, I am happy with it for now as a reverse facing out addition to my type set. I will probably upgrade eventually, but this is decent for now and worth the VF money I paid in my opinion.
Wow, that reverse does pop....problem coin? Maybe, but as long as you are happy with it. I'd probably bite if I had a chance at this one....
What do you mean by that? You think the coin is fake? The obverse was cleaned and probably weakly struck. More extreme in this case, but not unusual.
I think it's the lighting. The reverse has some hairlines, but they aren't really parallel and they are very light in hand. I attribute the lack of luster on the obverse to cleaning, though I suppose it could be uneven wear.
Not an expert at these, but I think the dealer had it correct - just based off reading my grading book LIBERTY seems to all be there, but is weak. It could be a weak strike, but looks like wear to me. And pictures sometimes show somethings that might not be noticed in hand. In this case the obverse looks cleaned like maybe it was dipped - the reverse looks like it was whizzed, but could just be the pictures. This just my opinion and you have the coin in hand. If you are happy then Congrats on the new addition.
Thank you for your opinion Mark. You may be right about the uneven wear. That could also explain the lack of luster on the obverse. The reverse certainly has not been whizzed. That is honest luster, with a few hairlines in between. I'll try to get some better photos.
Still a pretty coin , and the reverse does pop , cool coin especially for what you said it was for , hey Green you're dating yourself with the word pop , you could of used my all time hated word , groovy . LOL rzage
IMO: You are justifying/rationalizing keeping a problem coin. Don't. I have found that purchasing problem coins may satisfy your short-term need to add to your collection, it will bother you and you will eventually get rid of it likely at a loss. Patience, as they say, is a virtue.
Quote: Looks "odd" to me. The obverse is worn far more than the reverse and I smell a rat. What do you mean by that? You think the coin is fake? The obverse was cleaned and probably weakly struck. More extreme in this case, but not unusual. The coin is either fake or, more likely, has been "messed with" IMO.
