So, I was bidding on an auction and (before I say it, I know it's unexplainable/unforgivable) I bid on a MS-66 1890 morgan. OH yay I thought, i'll just throw in a relatively low bid and by whatever off chance I'll win this nice coin. Needless to say, I didn't check the TPG that graded the coin (SGS)... Who knows why - blah blah - i've learned my lesson. So my question for you all is - what do I do with it? Should I spend the extra now and get it graded by a more reputable place? or just try and sell it as is and recoup as much as possible? I don't have the coin yet, but maybe I could post some pics later.
Plenty of time to decide, wait to see the coin in hand. You might find some other issues that might preclude submission to a top TPG. In either event, you can always consider it the cost of education. :smile
An 1890 Morgan is not worth sending to a TPG unless you think it's at least MS-65. And not cleaned. If you don't think it will pass those two criteria, keep it if it has not been cleaned and is an acceptable grade for your collection. Otherwise crack it out and see what you can get for it.
Well depending on what was spent - too much then get are refund. If cheap then do like Kanga mentioned and save the return shipping.
and another expensive lesson - just checked "All sales are final" - Anyways, I'll check it out - see what happens.. grrr
If it's from eBay there isn't any such thing as "All sales are final". If it's not as described, file a SNAD.
If you paid with paypal and it wasn't as described you have some recoarse , if not it's a relatively cheap lesson learned . rzage
keep it on your desk, right in view to look at when you bid in other auctions. well, there is a return policy..I suggest you use it after determining, whether or not it meets the grade.
I got my 1st slabbed coin in a "Lot of Old Coins" on eBay. I bid up to just under the bullion value of the included silver issues....and won the auction. Included was a SGS MS 70 Kennedy half. (clad) I was excited to posses my 1st slabbed coin....and a MS70!!!!!!! ...............until I received the coin. So I took a photo of it to remind me to stay in my raw comfort zone. I keep it in the slab so at least it wont get worse. Keeps it looking uncirculated and figure someday I'll crack it out and spit on it to clean it up:headbang:
First I don't think this coin will ever make into a NGC or PCGS holder and if it did make it into one of those holders it would never grade MS66 or even MS65. There is a reason why you won the coin for such a low price. Most of these coins have been cleaned or whizzed. I think the guy that slabs these coins also uses MS70 to make the luster pop even more. Only a sticker holds the coin sealed so peal the stick back and crack the poor morgan out. At least you only bought 1 coin. Well I hope you learned from this experience.
Many people have purchased SGS slabbed coinz, to end up in here to find out if they got a good deal, to only find out they were taken. So don't feel bad, you have just joined a very large group of peeps and I was one of them. When I first got going on Ebay, I couldn't believe how cheap I could get high grade coins and I thought about buying quite a few and did a little research, to only find out the truth and I sent the seller a respectful message declining paying for them, since SGS is a scam in-of-itself, and ended up with non-paying strikes because of it but that was better than ending up with the coinz. :whistle: I hope it didn't cost you too much.
