A Perfect Example of Why to NEVER Buy From TV

I record coin shows on tv for entertainment purposes only and I recently saw this and threw up a little bit in my mouth:

I mean, what a bargain! $63.00 plus $8.95 shipping and the Mint has them for how much??? Oh, yeah... 29.95 + 4.95 Shipping.

This exemplifies exactly why you don't buy from TV shows! They have too much overhead to sell you anything at a decent price.

    NBC must be getting desperate.

Leno is taking over in the evening, and the Tonight Show's ratings are droping.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

That's pretty disgusting. I know better to buy from the TV hucksters from previous bad experiences. So what did I do? When the CoinVault was selling the 2009 US Mint Clad Proof set for a penny less than the mint with free shipping I ordered 1 set because I had sent my Mint set back for way too much spotting. When I got the CoinVault set I found out why they were so cheap. The lens was cracked ont the 1,5,10 and 50 cent holder. I guess they had a sale on their own returns. What was that saying? Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice....:crying:

And what are they on ebay? Typically they are also well above the mint price even while the mint is still selling as well. No one says you have to buy them from ebay or the TV. Personally I don't care if they list them for $200.

I saw a show a week or so ago that was selling the same set for $34.89 (this included shipping), $0.01 below the mints shipped price.

I have already bought them on the secondary market for $32 out the door...

"This is way over priced. You can order from USMint or even Ebay much cheaper."

Think it will ever hit the site?

    LOL

    mint set problem

I agree with all the above but do you relize how many people have no idea that they can order coins from the mint. plus grandma and grandpa that are on a fixed income will order these for there grand children not knowing any better. To fix this we as a group need to come out with a way to get it out to the public that all can order from the mint.

Yes - when the mint closes, all auction sites and dealers stop selling and he&& freezes over - then you have to deal with the devil if you want a coin. :)

We're moving them pretty briskly at $34.95 per set our full retail.
"Frequent flyers" (very loyal customers) get them cheaper. Usually around $32.
The buyer pays no shipping and gets to look at the set before buying.

I may actually pick a set up myself. $30 because I work there. Cheaper than if I buy one from the mint and just a tad bit cheaper than $63 and shipping.

I rarely buy proof sets any more but have a feelling about this one AND the mint sets. I'd rather be out $30 than $70.

It's called Marketing and that's the Mint's job, sorry!

The only thing that bothers me about this year's set Dan is the fact that there is the potential on the part of the US Mint to flood the market with them so badly as to make them virtually worthless for a very long time to come. Ex: The 40% Silver proof Ikes, Bicentennial proof sets, 2000 proof sets, you get my drift.

It's happened to me in the past hence my rarely buying proof sets anymore. Hey, I could be totally wrong. It's a risk we take and I rarely take.

This has been happening since the mid 60's... have you seen some of the early to mid 80's proof set bids lately?? $2.50-$3.00???

I would be willing to bet that 90% or more of the proof and mint sets that the mint has put out in the last 40+ years have gone down in value from what was originally paid for them from the mint. So the mint flooding the market this year and next year and so on IMHO is a given.

Because we can get them cheaper then the mint is selling them for on the secondary market :)

    WHERE?
Where can I buy the new 2009 Silver Set for less than US Mint Price.
I would also take a UHR for less than the mint price.

I agree with getting them cheaper on the secondary market later in the future. I see the 2008 coins selling for less than mint price but not the 2009 coins at least not yet.
