Heavy clashed die, both obv & rev. But, circulated. These, Lincoln behind bars, or Lincoln in prison were popular years ago. value? Not a whole lot.
jessash, Congrats on a nice find! That is the most Die Clashed Lincoln cent that I have ever seen! I have and have had some Lincolns with strong Die Clashing but nothing in the Ball Park of your's. Frank
I don't know if you guys notice, but you can tell I cleaned the sum-beatch. This coin is one I found when I first started to collect. I though back then that it was a fraud, and it would not matter if I cleaned it. Dumb huh? Anyways, after cleaning it,(it was very cruddy and dirty), I noticed my mistake. Oh, well I will keep it and pull it out and scare my grandkids when I have some some day
jessash, Oh well! We all have learned from our novice coin collecting mistakes! You might try soaking it in Virgin Olive Oil for a few weeks and use a green Rose Thorn to see if the remaing corrosion will come off. Also, the Virgin Olive Oil might just tone down that cleaned look somewhat! After that, dip it into some warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, pat dry in a soft towel then set on a window sill for awhile...making sure to check on it at least once a week and see how it comes out. In any event, with that amount of Die Clashing, the coin is still worth a fairly nice premium even it was cleaned! Frank
Die Clash I don't mind the cleaning, it has good eye appeal. I think I'd rather clean some instead of looking at a cruddy coin. It's not all about the value.
Do you think this will work on my 1857 Flying Eagle(which I could kill my brother for cleaning) to give it a not-cleaned look?
jessash, I can't say for sure but if the coin has been cleaned, then what could it hurt to try!!!??? Frank
