As a collector of ancient/medieval South Indian coinage, this modern Indian commemorative 5 Rupees coin is a must have!

This coin celebrates the 1000th year of the Brihadishwara temple for the god Siva, constructed under Raja Raja Chola in 1010 AD. Le_temple_de_Brihadishwara_(Tanjore,_Inde)_(14354574611).jpg

  3. It seems you're well versed in Indian coins, so this would probably be the best place to ask, has India minted coins (modern) coins with ancient or medieval designs on them.

Also posting my Gadhaiya Paisa because I just got it and have a irrational need to share it everywhere I go.

I'm really not an expert on Indian coinage, I just like to collect colonial Indian and other such coins that pique my interest. There are numerous varieties of Indian coins, including various commemorative coins celebrating India's various cultures, and I only focus on its Southern area.

@JayAg47, Thanks for the interesting post. Here is a useful note on these coins from Peter Lewis, which I liked for the pictures for decoding the letters on the reverse.
