That wonderful feeling when one opens the mailbox and sees those telltale little packages!

There shouldn't be any change in trade between either the EU or the UK and the US unless someone changes the rules. The export of cultural objects will always be a contentious issue, but there are systems in place.

The EU is trying to make life difficult for imports from the UK, but one would hope that we would reciprocate. Distrust is after all a mutual two-way thing. I'm sure they will be consistent and have no hesitation in blockading Calais if croissant deliveries in Marseilles are 10 minutes late. I don't believe that they feel so threatened by a country only 1/7th the size of their community by population, rather I think there's a lot of sour grapes now a cash cow has upped and left. The recent action by the EU invoking article 16 to stop Covid vaccines reaching the UK via Ireland having spent years making the border issue the determining factor was a good case in point. We should have walked away from it too and stuck two fingers up to them.

The EU have long wanted to move financial services away from London as none of the founding member states had the same clout. If they dictate that Euro transactions have to be done within the boundaries of the EU, then that is their decision which we can do nothing about. The EU has always been protectionist (for the interests of the founding members). We shall see what transpires.

If I'm not mistaken that means that the shipping company doesn't even have the package yet.

That's what it's supposed to mean, but I've gotten messages like that and asked the dealer about it, and the dealer claims that they gave the package to the shipping company a long time ago. So each is effectively blaming the other one!

Yes, apparently a coin of Severus Alexander. One theory (not mentioned in the article) was that the coin came from the Middle East or Turkey and was dropped by a member of the Australian Expeditionary Force that was based in Egypt and the Middle East during WWI. Apparently some guy got the coin while he was away and happened to drop it in a park once he came back home. Otherwise we'll have to accept the notion that the Romans and/or their trading partners had dealings with the aboriginals.

On a similar vein. I sent a small parcel of Northumbrian stycas from the UK to a guy in France. Lost in the post, tracking eventually showed them as being in Tahiti - so only 9000 miles from where they were supposed to be. Thankfully they were not lost there, as that would have provided an archaeological conundrum when found. We know the Vikings traveled, but..........

Just a quick update on shipping from Poland: my coin was bought on February 12, shipped on Feb. 14, and arrived at ISC New York on Feb. 20. Tracking says it was sent by "priority registered letter".

I think you just beat me out for the "most misdirected mail" award. My entry was Tennessee to North Carolina, three months to arrive, stamped "Sent to Taiwan in error."

download.png An update on my second coin, a Julia Domna from Spain:

I bought the coin on January 20, with the knowledge that an export license would need to be obtained before shipping, which I was okay with. The seller (Tauler & Fau) was almost exactly right about the date by which an export license could be obtained...only off by two days. Today I was notified that the coin was shipped from Madrid via DHL, with a delivery date in Pennsylvania of February 26.

I've ordered coins from both Aeternitas and Lucernae recently that required a Spanish export license; in each case it took no more than one to two weeks to obtain it and ship the coin to me in the USA. On the other hand, I ordered a coin from Israel in late December for which it took about six weeks for the export license to be issued, contrary to the dealer's estimate of 10 days. The coin was finally shipped on Feb. 10, and I still don't have it even though it was shipped by Israel's version of express mail -- something called ECO Express.

Okay, one more final update, this one on my Julia Domna denarius:

I bought it on January 20 from Spain, knowing that it would need an export license - no big deal. On Feb. 23, it left Madrid, Spain by DHL for Leipzig, Germany, and on Feb. 24 it went from Leipzig to Milan, Italy, and on to Cincinnati, Ohio (all on Feb. 24). It was just delivered to me in central Pennsylvania, Feb. 25.

And it looks so much better in hand!
