Trying to find out more info on this 1992 P Kennedy Half error coin.
The "bald" part of the hair seems to be at the same level as the planchet surface.
The part at the top of Kennedy's head is also much wider than usual and it also appears to be the same level as the planchet surface.

The die was probably cleaned or polished to remove debris.

Harshly polished die. Once again, Philly using it's dies to the bitter end.

The Die was over polished in order to extend its life. Neat, nice to find and I'd add it to my collection. But you're not going to retire on it.

    Welcome to CT.

    Are you serious?

You don't always have to post the first answer. You need to post the correct answer.

Lost type happens to me frequently also, usually when the dreaded 'draft saved' makes its presence known.

Why does it bother me? Let me tell you!

I believe it's important that CT gives accurate information to new collectors. They hear one thing from you and something else from most of the other members and have no idea which is right. They don't know you from Fred Weinberg. IMO it just adds confusion.

There is nothing wrong with you answering posts. In fact, please continue. Just make sure you know what you're talking about. This isn't the first time you've done this. Take the time to give the absolute best information to new members, even if it means doing a little research before posting (I frequently do this). And if you're not sure but still feel the need to respond, just qualify it with a "best guess" comment. You'll build a lot more credibility by posting correct information than you will posting the wrong info.

I'm not trying to pick on you, just trying to help you learn and grow. I started in this hobby when I was young and was running small ads in Coins magazine and other publications when I was your age. I remember how I was treated by some of those "Old Guys" at the local coin clubs and coin shops and it wasn't nice. Make sure you're building your numismatic credibility, not ruining it by giving incorrect info and then acting like it's no big deal.

Just my opinion for you to think about. Others may disagree, but I'm only trying to help.

Thanks for the comments, food for thought and I appreciate it. Please see my other posting on a 1995 P half dollar for a similar error. I keep running into these...

@Oldhoopster Sage advice my friend. We have a few others here who always feel the need to be the first to jump in and end up saying not much of any value. A lot of times, if the question has been answered correctly I will just like on that answer and move on. Sometimes I might add something if I feel it adds something positive to the answer. But yeah, people should think twice before answering just for the sake of being the first. Some should not answer at all until they get the correct knowledge. (Not referring to anyone in particular)

There are three posters nowadays who seem to be fast on the trigger without aiming first. Enthusiasm is fine, but, like a delightful puppy, getting licked in the face gets old fast.

I ain't perfect, but at least I try and learn, and if I don't know, I make sure to say that it is only my opinion. Hope this Pandemic lockdown is over soon...

So I think I agree with the over polished die explanation. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm familiar with the "no FG on reverse" Kennedy Halves that my research shows have the same root cause---over polishing---and they are pretty common in my opinion. Two are currently listed on ebay for $7-9.

But this "missing hair on obverse" I've NEVER seen and I'm trying to gage what this example might be worth. Any opinions on that?

And some more to think about, the "no FG" Kennedy Half is worthy of a CherryPicker's guide listing (example 1972 D, FS-50-1972D-901)---so why wouldn't this be worthy?

I do the same thing, giving the post a like if I agree. But it's also good to have a couple responses, even if it's nothing more than "I agree with xxxx". I think that's a good way to show that there's a consensus among the members.

@CoinAce sorry to hijack your thread, but some things have building for a while. CT may be a little difficult and frustrating at times, but in the end most of us just want to share pics of our coins and help others to learn and grow in the hobby

J.T. Stanton (R.I.P) was a good friend, and he told me many years before he passed that the CPG does not intend to list every variety because it would take too many volumes to list them all.

As a final note on this one, I sent the coin to ANACS and it came back with an official Overpolished Obv Die designation. 20210722_171153.jpg

I have had two of these in my collection for years. Thanks so much for this thread. This is the first thing I have read to suggest an error of any kind.

I may actually sell one now and keep one. :)
