For me this is an unexpected local purchase of coin originated from Kunker 2016. At any way this is an iconic words "Syracuse dekadrachm" I think much more easy to obtain in such AV condition than in AR variant It looks very different in style and technique in compare with Macedon type staters (Philipp, Alexander, Lysimachos and etc.) and much more enchanced skill of engraver of such sofisticated dies (IMHO). So, now I am a fan of Syracuse too, and if you have any syracusian coins, please show tham
90% of my coin purchases were unexpected. To borrow from George Mallory: "because it is there" in an auction catalogue. This Hieron tet was on wish list, though. CNG photo.
WoWiE! Congratulations, that is a true show stopper How large is it and what's it weigh? My favorite Syracuse tet: SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny 485-466 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm - 17.45 g). Struck circa 480-475 BC. Charioteer driving walking quadriga right, holding kentron and reins; Nike flying above crowning horses / Diademed head of Arethusa right, surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 134 (V60/R93); SNG ANS 38 (same dies); Randazzo -. rev sl off-ctr, sl surface imperfections, most notably a horizontal scratchlike flaw in obv right field.
Awesome, very nice! I have a similar coin on the way with the same depiction of Persephone but Pegasus on the reverse and in bronze. I also agree with you, coins from Sicily and Syracuse are among the most beautiful coins ever made.
Hmmm... I think about 3/4 of my coin purchases was totally planned before. Almost every coin is a result of study and in some cases of long hunting. For me this case with deka is very unusual also because I have always leave Syracusian coin out of my interests because they are heavy to buy and I have never seen them in hands before, this is a first Syracusian gold I have seen in hand. And buy it!
Gorgeous! Here's my Syracuse piece. I hope to add at least one other this year. I've shown this one several times before on the forum but I can't help posting it when there's a good reason again.
Shut up, no they aren't now go away and forget you ever suggested such a thing. There is nothing to see, just move along and collect something else! The one I still kick myself in the bum for not buying when I had the chance about 10 years ago. Can you imagine such lovely coins from a culture that existed before Rome?
Congrats IVAN , me like. Amongst all these beautifull big silver coins , here's a humble bronze coin:
