How realistic are the prices in the NumisMedia Fair Market Value Price Guide for US Gold? Is there a "go-to" price guide you would recommend for pricing US Gold?
Yes, the Grey Sheet. But in the end it is just another price guide like all the others. On some coins it will be accurate and others it won't. What you need to realize is that there is no such thing as a "go to" price guide for US gold or any other coin. What price guides should advertise themselves as having are "ballpark prices", "rough idea prices", sometimes accurate and sometimes not accurate prices". But they are not gonna do that, because then nobody would pay any attention to them. You want to know what any given coin is worth in any given grade - go look them up in the Heritage auction archives. And even there you will find that prices for the same date, mint and grade will vary by as much 50-100% - for the same coin.
If it's a more common date and it's slabbed, I find searching Teletrade and/or eBay closed auctions very helpful. That tells you what folks are really paying (add the juice for Teletrade numbers) for the coins and if you have a nice example and can actually take a decent photo, chances are you can do a bit better than those results if selling online.
thanx guys. I am finding heritage prices a good amount higher than greysheet. I came across the guys behind numismedia at the ONTARIO show & there prices are much higher. Just trying to get a "feel" for what the market actually is. Ebay & heritage is what i wll go with
