Today i was waling around in a local coin shop and as usual there was a 50% of basket of coins, and I noticed that they were some slabbed coins so I took a look. I found a PCGS graded Ike dollar MS66 1971-S that was marked at $42, so it was $21 dollars. I knew that it was worth more then that but not an Ike expert, but i did buy it, when I got home I searched the PCGS website and saw that thier value was $70 so i figured that it was a good deal.
Well not a bad deal, but I would never use PCGS prices - they are inflated. Looks like on Heritage they sell for between 23 and 39 dollars - typically. OOPS - Welcome to the forum! I always use heritage for realized auction prices.
mark_h is right on. Visit ha.com and register, its free, then you can track auctions, and search all sold items for pricing points. It's not gospel, just another piece of market information based on actual sales. Your Ike is still a pretty good deal.:thumb:
Welcome to the forum and I'd tell you what they did but the already did. You didn't do bad though. Ikes can be tough and if you like it go for it I say! clembo
Welcome dabsonb, I'm not sure if your interested but I'll fill you in anyway. What I do is catalog coins on my computer. I haven't got around to Ike's yet, but I will visit sites like Ha.com, and several others and copy their pictures, copy the prices and save them to folders on my computer. You never know when you'll be in a situation to buy and you won't have comparison photos to use as reference. Here's a few examples of MS 64 RB examples of a 1922 Canadian cent with realized auction prices:
good deal Yep, I think you got a good deal. A lot of dealers don't really follow the Ike series, so there's lots to be cherrypicked. Especially a slabbed coin. If you get more Ikes, look for the 1971-P in gem condition, and also 1972-P with type II reverse in any condition. Happy hunting.
PCGS graded coins have been selling far far below (sometimes half) the prices listed on their website. Yes they were inflated to begin with, but in reality, they have not caught up with the plummetting coin sales being realized on Ebay, Heritage, etc. Some series seem to be doing better than others oddly, taking less of a hit. Lincoln's have held stronger footing then let's say Morgans.
I would be careful about looking at the Heritage realized prices as your only guide to prices as well. I think the PCGS Auction Prices realized is an even better tool (although there are no photos). If you are really researching a coin's value, you can look up the coins in the archives on the Heritage, Bowers & Merena and Stacks sites. Keep in mind the Heritage auction archives and PCGS compiled auction prices realized only represent one segment of the market -- auctions, and do not account for the prices of coins sold directly from dealer to customers. Anyway, it sounds like you did all right with the Ike, Dabson. Enjoy it.
Thanks again for all the help and I have been cataloging my coins on mircosoft exel. Is there a better software that is free to download that would be better?
