Bear with me, this is a long post! Basically all the gold coins I've ever accumulated, sold, and still have.

You're probably all aware of this one, one of my favorite coins. Few different pics of it:

    Some of my other gold:

Just a common date impulse buy I bought last year:

Here's an interesting coin, this is a persian wedding token.
These were appanretly thrown to the bridge and groom during weddings
similarly to how rice is thrown today:

    An interesting 'coin'
These were actually made in vietnam during the war, and were smuggled out
in paper tube rolls and shoes. Usually made around 1930-40's
Very very thin and easy to bend, often times they were folded over to conserve size.
They are pure gold, as says on the one side "OR PUR" which is french for "pure gold"
Apparently vietnam had some old french colonies at the time
    Its about a 1/4 oz
I bought it for a premium from jonathan kern at a major coin show, but I've seen
many sell for no premium at all
    [IMG]

    (I paid 300 for it)

    Here's an interesting gold bar.
I bought it at a local coin show, and it is still sealed 1 gram
pamp suisse 9999 fine gold bar. What I don't understand to this day is
why it has some copper oxidation (also known as a copper spot on coins)
on the face of the obverse. Under magnifcation looks like a small red blob.
Now on 90% gold I can see, its actually 10% copper. But with four nine gold, how?
Im' not sure, I'm guessing it's just some freak oxidation
    [IMG]

    Gold french angel.
Bought this at coin gallery, tis about AU bullion coin.
Apparnetly these are considered 'lucky' coins, hence 'angels'.
They were made in france and saved one person from the gullotine, or so the legend says. (He had it in his pocket and apparently it somehow saved him)

Here's an interesting coin from japan called a gold nibu-kun.
They were currency in japan during the mid 1800's. I bought it from
clark smith before he stopped ignoring my emails and selling to me. (I should say he is a very reputable dealer and I must've upset him years ago)

I should also mention they are cast, not struck, and is an alloy of gold and silver (22% gold)

Bought this from dooly on NGC forums. He bought it in the UK, orginally he bought it as MS
but PCGS seemed it AU58. Good enough for me.

Here's a common double eagle I used to have. I traded it to mark feld for my classic head.
He sold it, and to my surprise even gave me the profit he made off by selling it. I've never seen such an honest dealer before mark feld

An old $10 I used to have, traded it for something else.

The 'infamous' photo of when I did a scratch experiment on my MS sovereign.
I still have it, and it graded NET AU-55, UNC details at ANACS (old older).
I Cracked it out and still have it raw as a learning lesson.

    My AU58 indian:

I actually bought this coin at an old place in las vegas which had a PCGS grader at the time.
I bought it raw and would never buy one raw again due to the counterfeits, but it was graded AU55 raw.
I was surprised when it came back from PCGS!

Some more gold I used to have:

Shown is a 20 peso aztec calender coin, mexican 5 peso, mexican 2 peso, old gold ducat, gold sivereng, 5 dollar indian (raw), and gulden 10 coin

A photo of the ducat, it's a problem coin, cleaned and damaged from jewerly. I sold it long ago

Still have this one, bought it from lord M before I was banned from the PCGS forums.

Possibly the worlds most smallest gold coin. They were made in india, and are called 'fanams'

Wow, looks like that's everything. I got my first gold coin 1997 when I was 9 or 8.
Saved all my birthday and christmas money for it. it was an american 1/4 oz eagle, 1997 date

WOW Gold Coin Lover, that is quite the collection! I love the first coin, and of course that Indian and that 1901 S MS62 $5 is really good looking as well!

When displaying coins, moderns make a wonderful counterpoint to older classic coins. They go together like salt-n-peppah.

Well, since this is a gold posting free for all, I thought I would post this. This is a counterfeit $3 gold coin, 1855. This was a purchase I made early in my numismatic efforts, and this was a big lesson for me. It is actually what lead me to this forum, and countless hours of research I've done on counterfeits.

I would now consider it "cool gold", because it is currently being put to good use. I ended up selling it for melt to one who teaches classes on counterfeit gold, and has recently used it in a seminar to help people make out the diagnostic of counterfeit gold. Feel free to comment on it and point out some of the diagnostics(they are quite abundant and in studying it, I have found close to a dozen suspicious areas on the coin).

This was an ebay purchase from aboncom.:mad::mad:

That $3 1855 is pretty wonky looking. STATES is all misaligned and the crack on the obverse is jumping out at me, plus the alignment of the head-dress where it starts over the L in LIBERTY looks off. Irregular dentals around the rim maybe...

Also, interested to find out how much gold weight you got out of it when you sold for melt? Did you recoup much from what you lost in buying it? Was it really off from the .900 gold /.100 copper it's supposed to have?

  12. johnny54321

    johnny54321 aspiring numismatist

The coin was pretty much dead on as far as weight and size were concerned, so we "assumed" that it was about the same specification as the real deal. I don't know for sure, but regardless, the buyer knew what he was buying and that the melt value was an assumption.

I sold it for a fraction of what I paid.

Very grainy, uneven appearance. Not very sharp details. Toothy denticals, spike on the reverse. Spacing on letters is inconsistent.

I am too new to know about this... but... THANK YOU for the laughs!!! Oh, did I mention that gold I posted earlier was in a garage on some land I just bought for $10!!! :goofer:

Actually, that is a picture from the Fort Knox Gold Depository, which, for some reason, I have had on my mind for the past week or so. Sad to say, I did not find it with my super duper metal detecting friends :(

heh, I would hope... I seem to recall hearing that one room in the depository holds roughly 500B in gold at current values. While I could easily spend 20m or so on a super high end Lincoln cent collection, I think that the remaining 499.98B would at least allow me to finish a nice Jefferson collection too :D

OOOO!! I love it! Nice crusty CC gold. Very special!!

Yeah. The reverse detail is quite mushy, but the obverse detail is actually stronger than most MS genuine $3 gold. Especially in the hair. Also, the kernal arrangement on the reverse is quite haphazard.
