Have you seen new restrictions on exports from EU to US

I buy most of my ancient coins online from the EU. Brexit changed that. I have had to supply extra information after buying some items, but not much changed until.... A dealer I have bought from for a decade added a line to his auction:

Please note: SHIPPING only to ITALY AND UE.​

I asked what changed and he said:

Unfortunately, with the Brexit, significant customs restrictions have been added to shipments outside the EU, perhaps by retaliation against UK’s choice, and it is practically impossible to send coins outside the EU for the moment, in addition to the covid has extended shipment times​

It is interesting that some LRB coins that should not be restricted from Italy to the US have that note. I hope with time restrictions will be loosened and this will not be my last RR coin from this dealer.

I have had no customs-restrictions problems whatsoever in the last month or so with exports to the USA from France, the Netherlands, or even Germany. Nothing has changed with Spain either: sometimes one has to wait for the dealer to obtain an export permit, and sometimes one doesn't. (I have been told that the difference depends on whether the coin was discovered in Spain or outside Spain; a permit is required only in the former situation.)

I saw something similar from one of my normal go to auctions. I should have connected the dots with Brexit.
As well, like your friend stated, these shipping wait times are getting scary.

 

...i had some gifts sent to the UK and had to pay extra for a VAT...they gotta pay the vig on the queens jewels someway i reckon...

Not for the the troubles you are experiencing, but for the pictured coin.

 

I predict that soon we'll only be able to buy Roman coins discovered in America; they're kind of hard to find...

I have seen reports of several found in the US. One was found at the San Jacinto Monument (I do not have a link.), but we could not keep it. Old stuff found on public land is restricted too.

 

Wasn't there a story a few years ago about a Roman coin that someone supposedly dug up in Australia?

 

Interesting. I have had a few orders from EU-based dealers this year, and delivery to my address in the US has been delay-free.

Now, there have been significant changes with the imports and exports between the UK and the EU as a result from Brexit. While the EU hasn't imposed duties on imports from the UK, they have instituted additional paperwork and restrictions which have resulted in major delays of products from the UK reaching what used to be easily accessible EU markets, pre-Brexit. I have read accounts of British fish and shellfish rotting on the docks due to these post-Brexit measures.

I certainly hope that any restrictions that may be in force for numismatic items are only temporary.

There is still much that needs to be worked out regarding Brexit, especially in the area of financial services. There are indications that more UK firms will locate to the EU. I read that Amsterdam is a favorite city.

 

Sorry to hear this. Some of my favorite dealers/sellers of Medieval English coinage are in the UK.

 

I don't think Brexit has affected shipments between the UK and US. I have one shipment from Roma that seems to be moving along smoothly.

If you live in the UK or EU, the situation may be different.

 

Brexit has not affected shipments out of the UK to the US, so far.

 

I've sold a few moderns last week to Japan/Germany/Canada and had no problems all arrived within a week.

 

I just received two different orders from London. Thankfully, no issues.
Now for those collectors in Minnesota we have extra restrictions to deal with- mainly from a very poorly written law. :-(

 

I've had a couple of shipments from the EU to the UK this year, and one from the US. None have had any problems, and both EU shipments were incredibly fast.

 

I've had quick problem-free shipping from Switzerland and Poland in the last month - the only coin with delay is one from Spain, but they were very clear that there would be a delay, waiting for export license (and even provided an expected day to receive that), so I'm not too concerned.

 

Has anyone experienced delays in shipping from Austria to the US? Three weeks in the "Label created, not yet in system" stage.

 

They appear to have introduced the same method for collecting taxes as some states do for sales tax when using ebay. The tax is added to the buyer's total, but the vendor receives the amount it sold for. i.e. eBay have become the tax collector, and then pass on the money. If it simplifies the paperwork, then I'm all for it.

As for UK/US shipments, there shouldn't be any changes as a result of Brexit. I will say however, that UPS are a nightmare at the moment. I've had a Heritage lot stuck in the warehouse here since 4th Feb. Nearly 2 hours on the helpline trying to persuade someone in India to get the UK office to send me the form they need to process the package and send me the invoice failed miserably. This is an ongoing systemic failure I see roughly once a month. Use Fedex or someone else instead.

I can't comment on what the EU is doing now as their rules no longer apply here. All I know is that exports have no VAT applied, wherever they are going.

 

I just got a parcel from Roma today In it a EL Kyzikos Hemihekte. It took 7 weeks, but no customs/ duties....so I am happy. Also got two other coin packets from USA/ other also from UK. A good day to get the mail from our communiity mailbox.
