    Do not get me wrong I hate the counterfeiters as much as you, however, in my HOBBIES I wager nothing that I can not afford to lose. That means $50 or 5-10K. It is also obvious I am not making my living dealing coins either.

    I will be as careful and give due diligence to each purchase that I can but IF I get stuck with something that is fake I will probably frame it and move on with my life. I will never give up collecting what I eventually calm down to in order not to be taken for a ride on any give coin.

    Oh and I never gamble what I can not afford to lose without it affecting my life.

    Thanks for the post it is very informative and interesting to see everyones opinion and even allowing this old lady to join in knowing nothing of what she is talking about. :p

    Rather like a combination of " Informed minds make informed decisions" and " change what you can change, accept what you can't, and learn to know the difference."

    Welcome to the forum!!

    The "learn to know the difference " took me decades to accomplish and appreciate! Although some say I am still working on it:goofer:

    People were counterfeiting over a century ago as well, just look at the gold coins and all the counterfeits. Even the Omega man coins were near perfect duplicates except for the signature hidden in the coin.

    So I think this problem has always existed, it is not something new.

    From what I read the Euro coins in circulation today have about 20% of those being counterfeit and are still traded freely. The problem is the governments don't seem to care.

    I like the approach alot as it nearly eliminates the threat of counterfits 100%.... Just curious:
    What the cost for pedigreed coins ?
    Average ?
    Median ?
    Max ?
    Min ?
    Availability ?
    Population ?

    Some pedigrees are more enticing to a greater number of potential buyers than others.

    Some buyers will pay extra, while others wont.

    Generally speaking, a lower value coin is more likely than a higher value one to bring a high % premium, just for a pedigree.

    In many cases, there is very little premium just for the pedigree.

    It all depends upon the specific pedigree as well as potential buyers for the coin.

    Yeah, good generic answers... I was looking for something more definitive.
    Maybe:
    Average = ~$8,000
    Median = ~$2,000
    Max = ~1M
    Min = ~$100
    Population = ~10,000 documented pedigreed coins known ?

    Often, there is little or no premium for a pedigreed coin. They frequently are "big ticket" items, though.

    There are no definitive answers - if someone tells you otherwise, they are kidding themselves and you. I will say that there are likely far more pedigreed coins known than the figure of 10,000 you included in your question above, however.

    Forgive me if the question seems naive but (in light of all the chatter lately about TPG'ers and counterfeits) have there been any counterfeit coins discovered in a pedigreed set?

    Not to my knowledge, except for known electrotypes and the like. Counerfeits are becoming very deceptive over the past few years, but were not to a century ago when most pedigrees were initiated.

    I'm sure SGS would slab it as MS-70 but the legitimate, top tier TPGs would spot it as a fake in no time flat.

    Not suprising the OP was illustrated with an early copper... and a huge toughie at that. Nowhere is more attention paid to pedigree than the old coppers.

    Except maybe 1804 dollars, and most other rarities of high dollar value.

    True; good point.

    The cool thing about early coppers is the average Joe can acquire coins with amazing pedigees ! Sheldon, Naftzger, Mehl... the list goes on. There are some coins in the upcoming Dan Holmes sale with very strong pedigrees; some should go for three figures. Not too shabby !

    Which reminds me... Holmes is one heckuva pedigree all by himself !

    I agree as well, but early Coppers are often accompanied by provenance material. There are many pedigreed coins to choose from, so it's not quite as restrictive.

    I certainly agree that fakes are an increasing concern, but I also understand that there are many genuine coins verifiable as the "real deal".
