Well its a bit of a stretch but about 1/3 of the USA was part of the Spanish empire when these guys were minted. A doubloon and a piece of 8. 1790 & 1793 Traci :goof:
Hmmm wonder what you were trying to tell us, that it is AT? LOL! I don't know if I like it or not, never been a fan of TONED gold, and it just looks a little odd.
I have to say, I have never seen a rainbow toned Saint before. How does a gold coin become toned like that?
Similar as other coins. 10% copper in that cold. Very little toned gold, as gold is less reactive than other coinage metals.
Outstandin' ! I'd be interested to know two things - what it sold for back in the 70s, and what a TPG would grade it.
I believe I paid $89 for this piece back in 1973. It was labled choice BU but over the years (and through the education I've recieved from all the fine folks here) I've come to think it's more of an AU-58. I've thought about sending it off to a TPG but y'all know me as a basicaly "raw" guy. :smile
Speaking of "raw," I committed the sin of buying raw gold on eBay before the scales fell from my eyes, but luckily wasn't burned on this one:
ditto that, what was this selling for in the 70s? should be an interesting answer if you're so willing to divulge that sort of info. Thanks.
Wow! Very fortunate luck and a very nice coin. The color is really appealing to me in this coin. Beautiful.
Thanks 900, Ok then, so here is one of mine: It's a Gold Noble for Edward IV of England, minted in the Netherlands ca. 1572. A dug coin, which I found about 2 years ago. It is about 5 cm in diameter (quite big). An incredible find.
Here is another. This one a gold gulden from Nuernberg, minted in 1507. Interesting late mediaeval coin with a date.
Eduard, those are magnificent! And, if I dug up something like that first coin, I think I'd have a heart attack (but I'd die happy!)!
Wow!! Absolutely amazing! That is an incredible find. 5 cm?? What is the purity and value of a coin like this?:bow::bow::bow:
