I came across this coin with a bunch of others in a shoebox. Most were easily identifiable, but a few like this one were not. My web searches turned up similar items that were identified as weights, but the only picture I found showed the same three pound twelve design on both sides. As you can see from the pic, this one has a head on one side. Does anyone know what it is and what it may be worth? -hairspring
I can only assume from the lack of response to my question, that this coin is either so rare that nobody knows what it is, or it is so common that everyone thinks I'm an idiot because I have to ask for help. I assure you, I'm quite serious in asking for help on this. -hairspring
The lack of response may be due to the fact that no one is completely aware of what it is. Or, it may not be a coin?
hairspring, I cannot attest to the authenticity of your' coin! However, I lean very heavily towards it being a reproduction or restrike. After quite a bit of searching, I found an example of the coin which is referred to as a "Portugese Double Joe" at the link below. Click on the link and scroll down to # 41 on the list (it has W1525 by it and this maybe a Krause number). http://www.simmonsgallery.co.uk/2001site/weights/MB43/coin-weights-43-01.htm Frank
It is indeed a coin weight. In other words, it was used on a balance scale to verify the weight of ordinary coins. This design came in various sizes of different weights.
Thankyou very much to those of you who posted replies. The info you provided is much appreciated. It was more than I could find with a couple hours of searching. The info provided by huntsman3 was very helpful. As he indicates, it has similarity in appearance to #41, but I'm pretty sure it's not copper as that one is. It seems to me that it may be bronze. The material looks to be similar in appearance to #43 and #45, but they have slightly different impressions. On my wife's digital kitchen scale, it weighs 28g. Not very scientific or technical, but it's what's close at hand. Does anyone think this is collectible?
Simple answer is yes just about everything is collectable, now if you are asking should you collect it then I have to ask do you like it? Personaly I would have it in my collection it has a nice look to it. Now I have to comment on your second post 3 hours after the 1st!! and you complain that no one has responded LOL you have to remember that people are not on here 24/7 and no one (Believe me) would call you a idiot even if the question was a obviouse one to most or you are asking for help. Please learn a bit of patience some threads will take days for a response others are instant because those on line know or think they have a answer
Hmmm... well, I do thank you for your input. I suppose anything can be collectible if the item is valued or appreciated in some way by someone. In hindsight, I realize that my question was poorly stated. It should have been framed more like "does this type of thing have a collector community", since consumer demand is a fundamental of basic economics, and would assist me in better understanding the potential value of this particular item. That is essentially why I posted in this forum. I'd like to get an idea of what it's worth if anyone knows. Also, it appears that we have had a misunderstanding... not sure why... my second post was made 5 days and 3 hours after the first, not (as your response indicates) just a mere 3 hours after the first. Nevertheless, as moderator I defer to your direction. Your council on patience is duly noted.
Did you click on the link posted by huntsman ? If you did then you should have seen what the asking price was for a similar item.
I did, yes. Thankyou. It would appear that is the best input I'm probably going to get until/unless others are sold and the info can be retrieved. I don't have much time to spend on this project, and a couple more boxes of coins just turned up. As opposed to the shoebox mentioned in my first post, these are in chocolate boxes . Fortunately, many of the coins are already identified, so it's just a matter of looking them up. Thanks to all who contributed for your help.
3 pound twelve I have a Three Pound Twelve, however it has three pound twelve on both sides. Apart from that, I have no other information. (Picked it up from my mothers collection, after she passed away). Have you found any further info since the forum thread.
