when i get new bills i look at them, such as today i found a $10 today from 1981. Not in the greatest shape, but i kept it anyways. How many people do this? I do it with my change too..

I do it too. Then I run it by numbers site and check for fancy serials and errors. If nothing good, then I set it free. BTW my standards for anything good keep going up and up.

I had to limit myself (just by date) to the 60s and before.

To me it depends. Low serial #'s and condition. Eventually I spend them later if really need cash.

first i look at series date ... anythign older then 1995 i keep since the feds would destroy it if they got it. If its older then 1995, and a small enough denomination i keep them all. If its a star, i try to keep them all - even the higher denoms.

Then if its a 1988A, 1993 or 1995, i look for web notes (for an explanation on those click here :p] /url]).

Then i check all 1995's for the 295 back plate number. There is an error for thatseries with that back plate. I dont yet have a page on my site showing all my 295's or an explanation about them. Try to google '1995 fort worth 295 error' that should help you find out about them :)

After i search for webs, 295 errors and stars... i have a list of short print runs for certain series and blocks. I try to save what i can find of those. Some folks collect small print runs even if the total priting for that district was 20 billion. If there was a print run of 160,000 they will pay high dollar amounts for them. IMHO its a bit silly, but i know i have some collecting quirks that others think silly :D so it all averages out. So if i find some of those short print runs, i keep them and then either sell or trade them for things i DO like.

Then you have to check everything for Radars, Ladders, and other things of interest. Some folks LOVE to find what are called 'fancy' serials. I dont find much interest in them either... but again.. its up to each collector what they collect... so :p

There are also some older district, block numbers, and other oddities that fetch high premiums over face or a simialy note from the same district but a different block number. Books really help keep all these things straight. The more books and reading you do - the more collectibles you can pull from circulation!!!!
