Hi all. Brand new here. I came across these coins and am wondering the value of them. I know they are probably a dime a dozen,(no pun intended) but everything is new to me since I have just started collecting. any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you. (sorry for the bad quality of photo)
Welcome to CoinTalk. The $1G is a US Mint product. Hard to tell from the photo but it appears to be genuine and also appears to be circulated - maybe EF-45 or thereabouts. In that condition it is worth $150 to $175 or. I have no clue about the other coin.
Thanks HOBO. they are as real as it gets, at least thats what gma says. also interesting sample that came with these.. a nugget. (these coins and nugget have been saved in our family for years...obviously)
it is always tough to tell by photos, but it appears that the coins have some toning/or corrosion spots that I usually don't see with gold. The dollar seems to have a pinkish tinge around the perimeter. I can't tell if the half dollar is a restrike or not of BG-401 type http://www.reisbord.com/goldcalfractionals.htm also http://en.allexperts.com/q/Coin-Collecting-2297/fractional-california-coins.htm and http://reviews.ebay.com/California-Gold-Coins-and-Tokens_W0QQugidZ10000000006349401 Jim
wow. great links. thanks. i can see how you see the different hues and toning issues, it was under bad tungsten lighting. when i can get around to it, ill take better pics. they are bright, shiny-ish gold. that last batch i took looks really bad. but i assure you, its the lighting.
I know what you mean, gold is sometimes tough to photograph. I bought a Sovereign off of eBay with a horribly small picture that made it look like copper...here it is: Now look at my avatar, that's the same coin, except my picture represents the true colour of the coin.
the ironic thing is, im a photographer. BUT, these were taken with a lousey point and shoot. I have a large bag full of worldy coins I will shoot tonight with my DSLR and macro lens. I have a portable lighting (tabletop) studio I think will do the trick perfectly. CK'r, your avatar is a gorgeous color.
