Anyone got any good sites for buying proof sets at a reasonable price? I have looked at many websites and find them all over the place as far as cost.

    What proof coins?
    Modern (1936 to 1942, 1950 to 1955, 1955 to 1964, older, wha
From 1968 to present eBay is probably your best bet.
You just have to shop patiently.
The older ones probably can be gotten at shows more cheaply.

    my proof collection

I have built my 1959 to 2009 colllection on a shoe string budget. I have all the common sets and now I am working on the silver sets. I gathered all the common sets for under $400.00 my goal is to have all sets for under $800.00. It may take me awhile but i will do it.:eat:

You can try apmex also. Proof sets are a risky investment, many will not even sell at mint issue prices.

Be very careful on eBay. I just looked at a seller who bought empty 1999 silver proof boxes and 1999 mint proof sets. I know he's going to put the mint coins into the silver boxes and sell them. Buy only from trusted vendors.

What's to prevent this? Lot's of folks crack out the silver coins and put them in albums or send them off to TPG'ers. The left over lens could be filled with clad coins and resold. That's one reason why I'm Leary of untrusted sellers at e-bay. Heck, a few years ago I picked up a '99 silver proof set from a trusted dealer and the first thing I did when I got it was to open the lens and make sure the coins were the real deal. They were...:smile

I'm sure this question has been asked on another thread, but how do you open the mint set lenses without damaging them? I have purchased many mint sets from auctions in the past and a few have cracked lenses. I would like to replace them. My attempts in the past to replace them hasn't worked to well.

If you look very closely there is a seam along the side of the plastic lens. If you slide a very sharp knife along that seam and very carefully work your way around the entire lens you will be able to separate the two half's.

Thanks for the opening tip. How do you close the lens without damaging the new one?

    It snaps right back together.
I am talking about the 1999-Present sets.
The 90's don't snap back together.
