Hello, I'm not a collector of IHs but I came upon this 1876 and would like your opinions on its grade and condition. Thank you, all Dave
Wow that is a really nice Penny you have there. I am no pro but I would say that your penny is at least XF-AU, and according to the redbook is worth about 200-240. I wish I had one like that! Nice coin!
Either AU50 or AU53. Check out my grading set of IHCs in my signature line... not all dates are graded exactly the same though I've heard, and my pics aren't the best, but may help some.
It looks AU55-58 at a minimum to me, though, unless the images are off, the color does not look natural. It should still be worth AU money, however.
Thank you, all for your opinions. Illini, I loved your pictorial on the grades - that was very nicely done! Yes, my picture-taking skills need improving. This penny is brown in color, the background should be white, but the coin shows great detail, although with some condition issues. I am trying to find a fare value for this as I am doing a favor for a soon-to-be retired co-worker. Any suggestions?
I would say AU-55. Very little wear, and clear crisp diamonds. I love the "crusty" look of it. Outstanding coin!
I agree with the AU consensus. EF- not in my opinion. Sharp diamonds a VERY minimal wear on the lower hair curl and the hair above and front of the ear. Min luster but hard to tell. Personally would soak this one in mineral oil x several months rinse with acetone and place in album. I would have better eye appeal. Of course don't practice on this one if you have no such experience.
I think I have found a new appreciation for the copper penny. I collect Morgans but this penny is worth more than any one of my silver dollars. Ouch! Not sure if we will ebay or what but at least we have a better idea of what we have. Appreciate all the responses - it's like getting congratulated on a new baby! Dave
