Medals for Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.

Washington Before Boston Medal - Awarded to Washington by the Continental Congress. This piece was struck from the original die pair.

Jefferson Indian Peace Medal. Lewis and Clark give medals like this in silver to the Indians during their exposition. This piece, struck in the mid 1860s, is made of copper. The original die was used to strike the reverse as indicated by the die break.

Lincoln Presidential Medal designed by George Morgan, first issued in 1886. This is generally considered to be among the most attractive 19th century U.S. medals.

I never knew of it as...or heard it called...or saw it listed on calendars...as "Presidents Day" until after the Monday holiday bill in the 70s, I believe. It was always recognized as Washington's BD on 2/22 and Lincoln's BD on 2/12...both being school holidays if not National/Federal holidays. What I recall is those two separate holidays being so close together for those presidents was a/the catalyst to honor all presidents (many thought other presidents weren't being given their due and wanted to create more separate holidays) PLUS to consolidate two holidays just 10 days apart into just one holiday to help save money after barely a month before having two holidays just a week apart with Christmas and New Years...AND to standardize as many holidays as possible on Mondays for 3-day weekends plus to eliminate odd-placed holidays in the middle of weeks (on a Thursday for example) and have to either come back for one work day on a Friday or take it off, call in sick, etc. which was happening and costing the labor force. Sorry for the run-on.

The real G.W., the man who could have been king and knew enough not to. It was all down hill after him.

I read a book about President Washington about a year ago. It was very detailed and great information. His mother, although a good mother, seem to me to be very demanding. When he was fighting the British, she wrote to him, complaining that he was not spending enough time with her, and other great information. I grew to love Washington, and I recommend that you take some time to read it. It was very lengthy, so I signed up to read it with Amazon's Audible. Without him, we would be another Australia or Canada or one of their other "territories."
