You Euro coin collectors will be very pleased to know that Greece has issued 2 silver 10 Euros to commemorate Maria Callas (who died in 1977) & Nikos Kazantzakis .I don't know if they are coins or medal-coins though. Here's a couple of links; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Callas & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikos_Kazantzakis . Aidan.
Chris,Maria Callas was an opera singer, not a composer,I'm afraid. If the 10 Euros commemorating her shows a musical instrument &/or musical notes, then it would count. I got off the 'Euro News' part of the EuroReg toolbar. Aidan.
Aidan, she was one hell of an opera singer! I never stipulated that she had to be a composer. If she's a good enough musician to be on a coin, then she's good enough to qualify in my books. However, being a 10 Euro silver coin will make me less likely to track one down, though.
Would be interesting to see the pictures of those two pieces. I thought they were scheduled for September. As far as I know, these coins will be available as parts of proof sets only. (One with the eight circulation coins plus Callas, one with the eight plus Kazantzakis.) Mintage probably 5000 each. Another €10 coin will be dedicated to Pindos National Park. Christian
Christian, you could find the details on the website of the Trapeza Tis Ellados (Bank of Greece) regarding these medal-coins. Aidan.
It seems to be a hard to get coin, but maybe it's available via Greek collectors: http://www.euroswapper.com/home.html
Problem with this coin, and the Maria Callas piece, is that they were issued as parts of sets only: The eight regular euro and cent coins, plus the Kazantzakis (or Callas) regional collector coin. Those sets cost roughly €100 each these days ... Christian
Thanks guys I'll keep looking. When I was younger I never thought (nor had the ability back then) to order directly from another country's website. However these are long gone and likely can't be had from the Greek government any longer I surmise.
