i was looking around e-bay and happened across this online store called great southern coins. they seem to have a good number of very nice coins. i was wonderin if anyone has done buisness with them and how reputable they are. with all the talk of online fakery goin on, im leery of putting up my good money without some more info from other people with any knowledge. any thoughts would be apreciated.
Well, a similiar thread was on another forum. I will post the same reply that I posted over there. The coin I bought from them was a raw New Orleans Morgan that was listed a MS Proof. I won the auction and when the coin arrived, I was less than impressed. I immediately sent it back, and to their credit, returned my $$ promptly. After that experience, I would not buy raw from them. I would be careful, but they do have a good return policy if you choose to buy from them.
I wouldn't bid on their coins with your money. Do yourself a favor, if you are looking for high grade coins, stick with PCGS and NGC graded coins. Why on earth would someone have a raw 1896 Proof Barber quarter for sale in a no reserve auction? The answer is because there is something wrong with it. http://cgi.ebay.com/1896-Barber-Quarter-PROOF-SOLID-GEM-PF-SCARCE_W0QQitemZ280367346746QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item414732343a&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1205|293%3A1|294%3A50 The photos in that auction are designed to lead you to believe that the coin is a gem proof. My guess is that the coin is severely hairlined and will probably grade max PR63. That is assuming it hasn't been cleaned and would body bag. I have never purchased anything from them and never will. Unless you are interested in raw problem coins, I would pass on this dealer.
What is an "MS Proof"? A coin is either a Business Strike (which is what a Mint State - MS - coin is) or Proof. It cannot be both MS and Proof.
You are correct. I did not realize that I posted it wrong, It was listed as PR, not a MS. A little tired and should of caught it.
In my opinion, you would be better off purchasing slabbed coins that you can return for a refund. If you run the company's name through Toolhaus, you'll find a decent number of negative comments.
I've always been impressed with the price they get for their coins. I have never bought from them because as others have stated, why would you sell such nice raw coins on ebay. If they were that nice slab them and increase your profits. I've always assumed that it is the photos and that the coins in hand would grade a few points less. This is all IMO.
Generally speaking, if you buy uncertified coins of any significant value on Ebay, you are looking for trouble. And you are nearly certain to find it. My general comments apply to that specific seller, as well.
+1 on that. I skimmed through there store and just about all the auctions have what looks to me to be doctored photos. They is no way I would buy from them for that reason alone.
I bought one inexpensive (<$50) coin from them and found that it didn't look nearly as good in hand as it did online. I've avoided them since.
The sole reason I have not bought a coin from them is that all the photo's look like they have been juiced to make the coin look better than it is. I just have not been willing to take the chance. I second some of the other opinions mentioned above also.
I am not necessarily recommeding them. I am just relating my one transaction. I can delete the post if it is going to cause an argument or is not worthwhile.
avoid buying their raw coins I suggest you avoid buying their raw coins for all the reasons stated above. They send out Emails promoting all their auctions. I know this because I am on their list. I enjoy looking at their coins but I would never buy a raw coin from them. I did buy a PCGS slabbed Morgan which had peripheral toning. I cracked it out & it is in my Morgan album today. Very best regards, collect89
I would stay away from all coins they sell. I have preached, not to buy from them, EVER. They juice their photos, make the toned coins they have, look even better, and make every coin look like it would grade higher. Many people have problems with them, and most of us have not even bought from them, but we know from other's experiences, to stay away.
I've looked at their Lincolns many times, their photos are completely juiced as well as any grades they imply. Plus, for some reason, people bid up their coins to unreasonable levels.
I have bought from them and will probably buy from them again but I too don't like their pictures but I cannot say for sure they've been photoshop'd. So treat them like any seller on Ebay, with extreme caution, and buy the coin, don't buy their description. Ribbit
How can you buy a coin from them then? All you have to go by is the description (always misleading) and pictures (that are incorrect).
im glad i posted my question on here before i commited to buying anything of value. this is why i love this site, so many good honest answers without the pages of pointless posts. thanx alot guys. and yea i dont think ill be buying from them based on your thoughts. im jus wonderin if anyone has gotten a coin that was as described on the site?
