First coins sent to PCGS Carl, you haven't lost a thing. Those are your favorite coins, and the memories with them are priceless. They are pretty cool memories too. The coins you have as graded geniune could be sent to ANACS if you wanted as cross-overs. They would give you the net grade of your coins, and the reason for it on the holder.
I see nothing to be disappointed about. And there are some real experts on this forum that have had coins come back bodybagged or in genuine holders. I think my first experience was just like yours - I have been more careful since then and have a higher success rate. Lately I just feel out an order for my father. It is just another learning experience. So don't be too bummed about it.
Do you have the photos of coins that you thought were high MS but got AU grades and coins that you thought were XF and AU but not graded? I am wondering what those look like. Years ago I purchased coins from major Coin World dealers, I wonder if some of those might end up like your coins, I haven't submitted any coins to major graders yet. Have been buying slabbed coins.
Carl- that's just what I was about to say. I only submit if I post here or show my dealer. My dealer is right at least 9/10 times or so. The handful of coins he told me where "iffy" did NOT grade. If he said it would grade it DID everytime and pretty fairly I might add (all at PCGS). If you posted photos we could give you much better info. Use a digital camera and do "digital macros setting". It takes a LOT of practice but worth it. The people here have saved me personally a lot of money in preventing potential problems and identifying the nature of my own mistakes through the use of photos. If it's any consellation, I have made mistakes from selling at the wrong time (gold) to cleaning mistakes, to bad purchases that total in the Thousands!!. One more for the numismatic tool box. :-( PS I have spent about $600ish or so in lacquered coins on ebay through deceptive photos only to figure out much later. You got off easy here!!
FWIW, my first PCGS submission consisted of three coins: Order #20222168 / Submission #3736564 Line # Item # Cert # PCGS No. CoinDate Denomination Variety Country Grade 1 1 13546529 7590 1889 G$1 US MS65 (my guess 64) 2 1 13546530 9177 1924 $20 US Cleaned (my guess 63) :crying: 3 1 13546531 9034 1898-S $20 US MS62 (my guess 63) The point being, we all have to learn the hard way what the TPGs look for in coins. As an aside, each of these gold coins were purchased raw on eBay -- yes, raw on eBay. Have fun...Mike p.s. I disagree with PCGS' assessment of the St. Gaudens, but that's another discussion for another time.
