I’ve really wanted a gold certificate for a long time and I was wondering if maybe there was a cheaper (than the older stuff) more common gold certificate I could buy for a reasonable price? Kind of like how a 1921 Morgan Dollar would be a more common and cheaper Morgan Dollar compared to the rest. In terms of the denomination I don’t really care what it is. Only that it’s a gold certificate.
Well, the lower denomination Gold Certificates will be cheapest. That would be the $10 GC. The $20, $50, and $100 GC's can be pricey even in low grade condition. I got a nice EF 45 one that looks much better in pics than the grade would indicate. So you just have to be patient.
That’s a beautiful note! Can you give me a kind of price range? Or maybe what you paid for the note you posted? I’m not sure how much I want to spend yet but if I know roughly what prices are I would know if they are within my budget.
Sure is a Nice note . Looks better than a EF45 ,then again currency is hard to grade by picture sometimes . @Gam3rBlake . Good luck on your search for Gold . I'll keep an eye out . Heck, got nothing better to do until The 14 th ( V-Day ) .
I think it ran me around $200, OTTOMH. Maybe $230 or so with the BP, fees, etc. I'll double-check over the weekend. I saw a Greensheet article that big denomination $500 and $1,000 bills in lower grades were seeing Covid-19 stimulus buying and the prices had moved up 30% or more in a few months. Doesn't seem to have hit all the coins or currencies in driving up their prices.
It may have the slightest of folds that are just not visible from pics. I asked CT'ers on the Currency Thread to GTG and they came back as high as the mid-60's !!!
Oh wow that’s a better price than I expected. I was thinking of maybe the best gold certificate I could get for $750 or so?
Oh btw here is my $10 silver certificate It’s the only bank note I own that’s graded and it’s cool because it’s $10 just like yours. I wonder if someone back then could trade my note for your note since they’re both $10 right?
But that’s what I mean..so technically if one $10 note is worth more than another $10 note due to Gresham’s Law the gold notes should’ve all been driven out of circulation and people would’ve only used silver $10 notes.
I think you can get a PMG 65 for a $10 or $20 then pretty easily. Might even be able to buy a $50 or $100 in PMG 58 quality (maybe a bit above) for that price. There are some nice ones that come by every few weeks on HA and GC. Maybe Ebay has one, though the quality and cost are usually not up to snuff. Be patient but for that much money you should be able to buy a VERY NICE one.
@Gam3rBlake, If you're in the market for a gold certificate, your most budget-friendly options are going to be the Series of 1922 $10 & $20, assuming you want a large size note. However, if you'd like a small size gold certificate, the series of 1928 is somewhat less cost-prohibitive. Regardless, with your budget, you should be able to procure an excellent example from either series.
Good points, BT...I assumed he was in the market for a small note but maybe not. Price is higher, conditions tougher to find in the large note arena.
I have several. The first one was the $100.00 1928 series. One day at my local bank that knew me, called and I went down to see what she had. She went into the vault and came out with it. She felt it was not real. She about to mark it with a pen and I told her not to. I now have a $100.00, $50.00, several $20.00s, and several $10.00s. The next time when she called she had a $500.00 note of the 1934A series and I got it for face and I did for the $100.00 above. I have been lucky on others too.
That depends on the condition, you can get a "RAG" for next to nothing in other words a filler until you can afford something better.
