A friend of mine found these 3 bills working retail a few years back and found out I was a coin collector and asked me about them. He wants to know how much they are worth. I believe the 34 Twenties in that condition are no more than about $25 or so, what about the $5 Gold certificate? Thanks...
I call it a "gold certificate" because it says "redeemable in gold," but it doesn't say "gold certificate" anywhere....
I can see the series just fine, the 5 is 1928 B, first 20 is 1934, second 20 is 1934 A. No idea what the values are, but that 5 is just a regular Federal Reserve Note, not a Gold Certificate. Before 1934 all FRNs were redeemable in gold.
I believe it is not clasified as a "gold certificate" but was at one point "redeamable in gold or lawful money" as noted but then later rescinded. It is classified as a Federal Reserve Note.
OK, that is what I had originally thought. I told him that it was NOT a gold certificate, but he showed me where it said it was redeemable in gold. All of the previous gold certificates I had seen had a gold seal. Thanks. I will let him know what these are. I see on ebay complete listings that the price you quoted above is about right. Regardless, these are NICE finds out of circulations for him. Bob
