Another counterfeit 1796 "silver" dollar, what can be done?

Just another counterfeit coin this time it has the supposed copy and says its a fake, but its listed under the US coins section.
Doesnt this violate ebay policies? Is there any way to take this down? Any way to get this seller to stop all fake listings? We need the junk and counterfeits to stop.

Not much...but I bet that the word copy is a watermark and not on the coin

 

I haven't bought from Ebay in awhile but I thought they disallowed Copies or if you want to say "counterfeit" coins , no ?

 

I'm actually an ebay seller and that is correct, you are NOT ALLOWED to sell counterfeit/copy coins (or any device used for making copy coins), Don't know how that guy managed to slip past the bars, but Ebay usually catches those things within a week or so of it being listed...

 

Images are straight from that Chinese website. The watermark is the same on many of them (the little white dots), pretending to conform to the Hobby Protection Act.

 

I’m guessing Ebays policies only require that fakes be marked & advertised as fakes. These ones clearly are.

I don’t think anything can be done.

Personally I think clearly marked & advertised fakes have a place. Some people (not me) can’t afford some coins and a fake acts as a hole filler.

Like a 1933 St Gaudens Double Eagle.

None of us will ever own one but if you have an album there will be an empty hole so people (not me) go with a fake for that particular coin.

The problem is remembering to tell whoever that coin passes down to that it’s a fake.

If selling to a dealer there’s no problem with pulling all the fakes out of the holder and taking in the rest.

Just my opinion though.

eBay does not allow fakes be sold even when "properly" marked or identified.
eBay removed the listing.

 

I learned several years ago from a man I refer to as my mentor "Charles Hayes" who unfortunately left us early in life, that when you are purchasing coins CARRY A MAGNET, it has saved me a couple of times and my friend who runs the local Gold&Silver store had a man come in with a "fake" Morgan with a hot date and when the client handed it to the owner he immediately felt something was wrong, it was just a little larger than a Morgan (to make up the weight difference) and it had just enough metal in it to make the magnet stick lightly.

i have had listed a few copies of confeederat coins, but i said in every part of the listing, fake coin for reference only, copy etc...one person bought it then reported me becuase it said "copy" stamped on the coin..lol i won the case..he obviously thought he was getting a 60k coin for 6.99 lol so yes, you can list copies, if so described

 

Maybe it's an enforcement issue? Replica coins are not allowed. Seems pretty clear but perhaps there's some loophole?

A number of years ago, they allowed copies as long as they were stamped COPY in accordance with the Hobby Protection Act. Then they changed the policy so that even marked copies were prohibited. I was paying close attention at the time, because I'd bought a set of gold coin copies (knowingly) as part of a large lot, and I had to move quickly to sell them (with clear disclosure) before the window closed.

I don't think they've changed the policy back, but it's also clear that it's not vigorously enforced, and I'm also pretty sure most of their customer-service folks don't know what is and isn't allowed.

True, but still be observant. I saw a Chinese ad on-line with a 1937-D 3 legged Buffalo for $8.00 it DID have copy stamped into it on the picture but never know about when it arrives. It made me a lil sick just looking at it. Ruining a great hobby.

 

Yes that applies to items clearly marked as fakes, still not allowed on ebay although there are plenty of sites where that is allowed (mostly Asian sites such as Ecrater, AliExpress, Wish, etc.)

 

The listing has been removed. Thanks to all that pointed it out to eBay.

 

ive seen these types of sales. the coin is show and the word "COPY" usally in black is superimposed over the image.
