Can anyone share with me some info on a 1913 Panama Canal so-called dollar HK-1029? I am looking for mintage and metal make up. Thanks. Joe
Joe the only Panama Canal coin I ever saw was from the Franklin mint. The series of 200 were minted in 1976. Its bronze. Here is the coin. :secret:
Joe: The HK-1029 is the same as #398, but in gold, only 2 struck. Hk-398 is listed as Bronze, scarce. Are you sure of the #?
Yep, sure of the number. I also sent a message to Tom Hoffman with the HK So-called dollar site along with pictures, which I will post below. After conversing via email with him, it is most likely the HK-398 and not the HK-1029 as expected. He had me weigh it and get some other info from me about the medal. I was basing my assumption of the medal number on the color of the medal. It does not look like any bronze that I have ever seen. But he said that a cleaned medal could have the look of gold. If you were to take any $20 double eagle coin and place it next to it, it has the same color, but it clearly does not have the weight if it were gold. I have not heard back from Tom, but based on our first communication and me weighing it, I am sure that this is bronze not gold. I must say for about a good hour or so I was fairly excited. The medal is not mine, its a friend's and he asked me to send it in to NGC to be graded. But I wanted to do some research first. Pictures are below. Here is something neat also, the obverse image is clashed on the reverse. I remember reading somewhere that this is a fairly common phenomenon with medals or privately minted coins. The one slabbed is what I expected it to look like. Thanks for getting back with me Frank with the number of gold medals made.
