Well I'm not going to picture as most of you have seen them. EVEN in circulation. In 1979 the U.S. Mint decided to subject the American public to the ugly mug of Susan B. Anthony. I'm still waiting for Eleanor Roosevelt's mug on a coin. Now THAT will be an ugly Gold Spouse.
"I beleive other pepople have been on a coin in thier lifetime. Happens all the time on Foreign coins, Queen Victoria as an example.
That might win. Hideous, just hideous. And we think American designs have suffered since the early 20th Century. Compare the above design to this German design of 1927. Now that is a shame. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=150357100448 You guys will hate me entry into the ugliest coin design for it is the first coin minted by the United States. That's right, the banshee that graces the obverse and the turkey on the reverse of the 1792 Half Disme. Flame Away!
I was referring to United States coinage. ...but, the closest thing we have to royalty in the US is the Kennedy family I suppose...so I guess a Kennedy being the only living person on a US coin (to my knowledge) does sort of make sense. :rolling:
This thread rocks! That 10 Euro is super ugly. I simply cannot believe that coin. However... ....this one take the cake. Looks like the bird has melted! LOLOLOL
Not the a picture I took ('cause I am afraid the sheer fugliness of this coin would have melted my camera...) but I did come across one of these while cataloging my niece's coins.... the Adenauer 2 mark coin from West Germany. Ugly man on the obverse and what appears to be some kind of chicken related roadkill on the reverse.
That €10 piece is a collector coin with ... a blank television screen in the middle. It commemorates 50 years "Deutsches Fernsehen" (which today is the ARD network). Pretty ugly indeed. Now the 2 DM coin, well, Konrad Adenauer became chancellor when he was 73 years old, and he had that office until 1963 when he was 87. Don't expect him to look like a teenager. And that eagle can be found on all 2 DM pieces from that statesmen series. As for the Bremerhaven piece, well, that was made more than 80 years ago. I hope and expect that today's coinage looks different - even if it's only pieces made for collectors. Since this topic is about ugly pieces, I won't post images of modern coin designs that I like here, but you may click the links ... http://www.honscha.de/bilder/10d064.jpg http://www.honscha.de/bilder/10d085.jpg Guess that collector who cherish coins from, say, the Imperial Germany may not really like such newer ones. But that also applies the other way round. Christian
Uh, that second coin is awful , but somehow I like the Dresden coin because of the symbolic picture of the disaster on the water.
