My father has saved this $5 bill for quite a while because there was something special about it. Unfortunately, he has completely forgotten what that was, and I don't see anything obviously interesting about it, but I don't know enough about paper money to be able to tell much more than that. So is there something special about this, or is my father nuts?
Nothing special to report on this one he may have held onto it because of the Red Seal however this particular note in the condition pictured isn't worth much over face value maybe $7.50
Well it is a red seal from 1963, so sounds like a keeper to me. It is not in the greatest of shape, but look at a $5 bill you would get in change today and compare, waaay different. I'd hold onto this.
the red seal as mentioned before would be the only thing special about the bill. but in that condition there is not much premium at all
If he's been carrying it around since 1963, I'd vote for crazy ...lol. It's just an old 5 in a design that isn't made anymore. It will still almost buy you a Frapachino at Starbucks.
The red seal is the "something special" about it. You just can't find them in circulation. Everything now has a green seal. For a paper collector, it is a keeper. However, the premium is about what is mentioned above....7 or 8 bucks at most.
Nice spin. He could have got it change when he bought something on November 22nd. Maybe the something special is how he got it or when he got it and not something about the actual bill itself. Just put it in your wallet and keep carrying it around.
Interesting idea, but my father is a die hard Republican, so the Kennedy idea is unlikely. I mentioned the seal the other night to him, and he's now pretty sure that's why he kept it.
The assasination of a United States President effects all Americans and crosses party lines. I'm sure that not only Democrats wept at the news.
its the kennedy $5 bill you have there! you dont know how much thats worth! look at the top of it, its not even made by federal reserve, this is when kennedy tried to cut them out, and in his mind put the real control of the economy back in government hands. Honestly thats a real treat you have there, maybe only a couple hundred ever made before he was assassinated. hope this helps you out. your dad had a very good mind to keep it!
Sorry. it seems more than a few hundred were made. But watch this video. Its abit random, but watch the last quarter-ish of it, explains it well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYxG1IYJVZA
interesting, i had no clue that Kennedy tried anything like that.. now i got to find more info on it!
A few hundred? Try 63,360,000. What does the video explain besides the fact that this guy from Megadeath believes the conspiracy theory that Kennedy was assassinated for authorizing the issuance of additional silver certificates? Which have nothing to do with the red seal United States Notes issued in 1963. Look at Executive Order 111110 which is often cited by the conspiracy theorists and linked by them to the 1963 red seals. If they knew anything at all about United States paper money, they would know that United States Notes (red seals) were never backed by silver. Not in 1963 when Executive Order 111110 was issued and not in 1863 when United States Notes were first issued when they were called Legal Tender Notes.
We've had this conversation here before. As expected, the conspiracy theorist didn't believe any source we quoted at him....
sorry i dont know anything about any conspiracy theory's on the subject i only know that it was kennedy that issued that bill. only by chance did i hear about the bill when flicking through youtube and came across that video.
