So I've got some ancients coming and I'm looking to store them in some kind of velvet box or something. Nothing too cheap that sheds or pills at all. Preferably American made but open to any suggestions!
I don’t nave an answer but am waiting for responses. A nice wall display with a glass door for viewing. You could take it down and hide it when out of the house. I think it is always nice to see them. I will include a photo of my Indian display
I have my slabbed (300 coins) in NGC/ PGGS storage boxes. I have them in order, so its easy to go to German states box/ France.... My SAFLIP coins (700) are in albums/ still have to organize better, I have Aurei/ Basel Dukats/ English Nobles all mixed up. But I usually look at one album when bored, before bed/ for having sweet dreams. The Lagina Brothers from, Curse of Oak Island" can come down to see some real treasure. John
Here are a couple of photos I posted last year of my display set-up on a marble table in the corner of my living room, with some larger coins and medals in a glass case, and smaller ones in trays. Plus I recently posted photos of the various vitrines (fancy word for glass display cases with shelves!) in which I display my antiquities collection.
I like the Abafil coin trays. They are middle of the price range but extremely high quality. They are not made in the US, but you could support Ed Waddell who is the primary distributor in the US. Here is a link. I have the mini-diplomat size (and several smaller sizes) because it fits in my safe deposit box.
It all depends on what you want to do with them. Want to display? Want to somewhat show but be able to put in sdb? Want to minimize packaging because you are a dang hoarder and cannot stop buying even though you already have thousands upon thousands of ancient coins and don't really need any more and yet here you are with three largest sdb's and still yet you continue to receive packages nearly every week and even have a dozen packages at your sister's place since that dealer will not ship to your state? Well, that is another solution entirely.
As you say, your ancients are valuable. Take pictures, load them on your computer. Put the coins into a safe deposit box. Don't leave them out for everyone to see. The wrong person might find out and take your treasures.
I also love the Abafil trays - they are great quality. Ed Waddell sells them and he is a top notch guy.
I see Robert Harris's Pompeii on one of those book shelves - one of my favourite novels set in ancient Rome! (And yes, I was book stalking you. lol)
Yep another Abafil customer here. I have 2 of their Medio diplomat cases. Fantastic quality and superbly made.Another shoutout for Ed Waddell too. Lumis Numis sells them as well. I have bought from them too and received great service. The cases and trays will probably be around long after most of us here will be. Abafil products are also very highly sought after. So much so in fact that when they sell in auctions they sometimes bring more than retail prices. I also have a 12 space case and a six slab case. True story here. I was selling some gold coins that I kept in the 12 space Abafil case. I was selling them to a coin dealer friend of mine. He saw the case and said sure I will buy the gold coins but how much do you want for the case? LOL As I have just told you the coins were sold and I still have the case.
I don't want to jinx myself, but I very strongly disagree. For me, the entire purpose of buying ancient coins is to be able to see and enjoy them and hold them whenever I want to. Just like my antiquities. I do take certain precautions (for example, I live in a safe apartment building, and I certainly don't leave my ancient coins out for everyone to see; the trays are easy to put away when I need to), but keeping them in a safe deposit box, with only the photos to look at, would defeat that purpose. I might as well just collect photographs of ancient coins. If I wanted to do that, I would.
Couldn't agree more. And that isn't just coins. It goes for most of my toy figures, many of my autographs, and some other hobbies of mine. If I can't enjoy them, off they go somewhere else.
I agree with Donna, we cannot live in fear. I love looking at my stuff. We have good alarm security system/ Rottie/ and the firepower needed to keep intruders out. Plus its a big house with lots of hiding places, when we are away. Best thing is not to show anyone your collectibles, or if they do know, make it known that everything is in a SDB.
I agree Donna. I buy the coins because I enjoy them. What is the use of buying them and then hiding them? I do not buy for investment purposes, I buy for the passion of it. In the unlikely event that any of my coins were stolen, the thief would have a very difficult time selling them. You see, some of my coins are so rare that if they appeared on the market they would be instantly suspected of having been in my collection by anyone with an internet connection. My coins are published online both a forum ancient coins and on my own website. It also does not hurt that I have discussed my coins on several websites. For example, I think it would be relatively easy to identify an offered coin as stolen if there were 2 known when I owned one and @David Atherton owned the other one. Also, a good number of my coins have been published in books and auction catalogues. It would not be difficult to match the coin with the photo.
