hey kanga nice red seal. i think its a border line Fine+ note. from the reverse, all corners except the bottom right are straight. man i tell ya this, the engravers for both coin and currency back in those days knew how to engrave you know. some of the eagle designs, walking liberty coin for example and your 1928 red seal, the reverse to me just pops out at you. some of the designs are just works of art. good luck brother....
Paper money grading is actually a whole different bird for me, and while have had some limited experience, am not all that familiar with grade levels and standards. Will yield to any experts, here. I've seen a lot of bills, however, that looked much better than their eventual grade (not unlike coins, right?. Can see that this one has been folded in half and in half again, plus crumbled up or similar at some point...maybe pressed out to cover/correct...not sure if that's tantamount to cleaning a coin. Can't evaluate paper to touch. From what I've seen/know, I'd say Fine at best...maybe less, VG/VG+.
I love the story on how they were released into circulation in Puerto Rico in the late 1940's in the hopes they wouldn't come back to the mainland US.
Nice note @kanga I know others have mentioned possibly compressing the note to work out all those creases, folds and crumbles. I'm thinking it looks very much like someone actually took a warm iron to it. Just a hunch.
I'm aware of the "warm iron" touch-up. But if I were to post my full size image, it would shoot down that possibility. The note is rather wrinkly. I don't use my full size images because people would have to scroll around to see it all.
Your LT did its job and still survived in nice condition unlike most of its peers. No obvious problems and decent margins so what's not to like!
Nice note Kanga!!! Steve, I have always wanted one for my type set, but refused to settle for lesser quality. Beautiful example!
Lot of different cross-currents when you decided to buy that bill: It's a bit off-center It IS mint-state (62) It has a very low SN How did you balance all of that ? Did you consider getting one better-centered but lower-graded ? Or with a higher SN ? Or maybe you have multiple Red Seals and just liked this one for the price ? Great bill, just want to know what went into your decision-making as I often have to balance different factors.
The red seal is a United States Note. They were not backed by a deposit of silver, and were not legal tender for payment of import duties or interest on the public debt
