Well good luck with the toning idea, just keep it away from birds... Or you might need to give it another acetone bath..
thank's :high5: Thank's for the tip what grade would you give without knowing the history of the bath's Dave
Well either way I would still know that something was done to alter the surface of the coin. Details stayed the same, just got rid of the distracting "wax". AU55 Details Cleaned. Since it is a common date, has been cleaned, and is in AU condition, it might be worth a couple more dollars than bullion value.
I echo the sentiments of others here.....good thing it wasn't a key! I've never tried an acetone bath, it's good to see the effects, very educational! My grade - AU-50 cleaned.
WHAT WHAT WHAT!?!?!?! When cleaning with acetone you give the coin a bath for 10 seconds max while swirling it around, then immediately putting it in distilled water. Repeating the process as necessary. Most acetone baths don't have this effect on a coin. Did you use pure acetone or nail polish remover? I'm sure the extended stay didn't help either.
dont do by have :stooge: Had to get wax out the 10 sec bath did not do it so i done a 10 min bath but when it tone's i hope you might never tell just dont know how long that will take lol Dave
Yeah, but, if you do it for 10 minutes total, you have to do it in 10 second bursts. Setting a coin in pure acetone that long strips the patina (sp?), leading to ugly polished surfaces.
but it was fun  Ok but i did not think about that at the thd time but injoyed the exp: But it was fun Dave
Haha, i experiment with junk silver too at times :goofer: Just make sure you don't do it with a key date
