I very much like the toning and portrait on your coin – very attractive! My only Nero ist the same type of as: Nero, Roman Empire, as, 62–68 AD, Rome mint. Obv: NERO CAESAR AVG GERM IMP, laureate head of Nero right. Rev: S-C, Victory with shield walking left, SPQR on shield (worn away). 28mm, 11.09g. Ref: RIC I, 312.
I’ve heard that before, also “the Tiber patina” which I assume is similar. What does it all mean Basil?
Nice addition. Despite his supposedly unfriendly character, the man did produce some very nice coins. Don't think so, see this link. From what I can see, the highlights of the OP coin seem smooth, shiny, and show the bronze color. The lower areas do not. Just my uneducated opinion however. It's a nice coin nevertheless. Here are my two bronze/orichalcum coins of Nero. With anything but a 'river' or 'Tiber patina'.
Nero Ae Dupondius Lugdunum 66 BC Obv Bust right laureate with small globe at end of bust. Rv. Victory advancing left. RIC 522 13.29 grms 31 mm Photo by W. Hansen Nero must have presented something of a challenge to the celators at the mint. How do they create an image of imperial power out of this rather self indulgent young man. It is interesting that they followed the path set by the die cutters at Pergamon who had to deal with the image of Philetairos. In both cases intensity is created by the contrast between the large blank areas of the cheek and neck contrasting with the intricate details of the facial features and the hair. The face is crammed into one small area set above two strong vertical lines the first formed by the forehead nose and chin as well as the second line of the eye and the front of the cheek.
Your Nero has obviously had a better life than mine. Nero AE As 65 A.D. Obverse: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P, laureate head right. Reverse: S-C, Victory flying left with shield inscribed SPQR. Rome Diameter: 26.0 mm Weight: 9.16g RIC 314, Sear 1976
