Hi all. Firstly, this coin isn't mine. I spotted it at a popular auction house, and would really like to bid on it (as this is one of my bucket list coins). However, the coin looks strange to me. It is weirdly round, some of the details look crude and flat, and the bust looks different to most other similar antoniniani. The coin apparently weighs 4.29g Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
Edit: I think I've found a die match to a known fake on Forvm Ancient Coins: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=8 And this one: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=13 What should I do? Should I notify the auction house? (The lot is from here: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=lot&sid=4489&lot=3244)
I think you should contact the auction house and tell them that their coin appears to be a die match to a known fake. Then let them make the final decision. However, when I checked your links, I got a "No image to display" message. I searched Nigrinian directly and got the same message. I don't know if the problem is on my end or theirs, but you might want to verify that the links work on a different computer before contacting them, otherwise they might not take you seriously.
This is to do with the inclusion of relative links (search results are indexed relative to a search) rather than absolute links. If you obtain the detailed information on a fake report (click the "i" above the image) you are provided with range of additional information including the URL: which is the absolute link to this entry in the database. They then look like the following links... https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-8733 https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-8776
They've responded: Dear Sir, Thank you for you assistance. You might be right. We will check it and once we agree with you, we will remove this coin from live auction. Feel free to contact us in the future. Regards, [their name]
..good detective work @Harry G ....it seems you've answered you own question and changed the coin world for the better...good job...
It looks suspicious to me too, but I'm not seeing a die match - those two are very similar, but not a match.
