This is from a box of 2020 uncirculated cents I got from the bank. What would have caused these strange indents? Could the planchet have been defected?
Either struck through sesame seeds or, from the flattening on Abe's cheek, struck repeatedly with a pointed something.
But this never made it to "someone". Fred Weinberg said it didn't happen at the mint. So, I'm sure it wasn't from the mint, but, it never made it into circulation, so that's why I wonder how did this happen in-between the mint and the bank. Not a big deal, just curious...
You can see raised areas around the marks which is displaced metal. That can't occur during the minting process. Coins are shipped in large bags to outside companies to be rolled. The damage could have occurred somewhere in their process.
Thank you Oldhoopster... Again, I was just curious as to what you all thought might have caused this damage. I don't see bag marks, forklift or storage problems that may have caused this, but, thank's anyway, it's going into my Zincoln jar as unknown damage.
Honestly, the ONLY definition of an uncirculated coin is one that shows no evidence of wear. That being said, your cent just looks like someone poked at it with a sharp instrument...gives it an interesting look though. $10,000 on etsy
