I'm curious to see what you guys all think about the National Collector's Mint. I have seen some interesting coins on their website, through emails, and direct mail. I like their 51st State Quarter idea depecting Washington, D.C.

Anybody have any insights into whether the NCM is reliable, and whether or not it would be worth it to buy some of these commemoratives from them?

    Thanks!

NCM is most recently known for hawking worthless gold and silver plated replica coins on TV. Their most recent product (I have seen the ad on TV at least 100 times) is the 1929 Half Eagle replica (as a 10 mil gold proof). What 10 mil gold proof means is: it is a base metal replica with gold plating. They sell for $19.95 (plus shipping). It, and their other replica coins, are absolutly worthless as a collectible. Their resale value is nil, nada, zilch, zero. They look very pretty, though.

NCM is viewed as being disreputable because of deceptive marketing practices. They hawk their replica crap on TV and in Sunday paper type of print ads, to the uninformed. To the uninformed, these ads give the impression that these are mint products. They are not rare, or collector pieces, and have no precious metal content to speak of. But they are pretty.
