That was very quick for 100,000 sets! The Marine Coin and Stamp Set and the John Marshall Coin and Chronicle Set are also no longer available according to the US Mint website. Short term values should be quite high. The sell out of the Legacy set is not that unbelievable, but I didn't suspect that the Coin and Stamp Set would follow so soon. The real sleeper in this may be the John Marshall Coin and Chronicle Set, since only 25,000 sets were to be offered.
I don't look for either set to sleep very long. While the short term gain could be very very good, if your looking for profit, that would be the ONLY time to bail out. Seen to many sets in the past years that drop like a rock as there will always be new hype just around the corner. As a 30 year collector, who has collected such sets, I found that they take a great amount of space and after the first few weeks of ownership they lose their appeal. I had to make myself quit buying them and finally, after weening myself from such offerings, I have now all but sold the sets I still owned. Believe I actually have one such set and it was a gift from my mother-in-law so thats why it is still here. Had sets piled in the closet for years and it finally got old. Short term I think they are great but learned to fear the results over the long term. Don't misunderstand me on this issue as I did enjoy the sets but the negatives slowly creeped in, at least on my collecting end, so no more sets or the hype that goes with them. I only buy the COIN now!
I ordered two of the Legacy Sets. The market will depend on what I do with them. I'm hoping to sell one for at least $199, but we'll see. I did well with the 2005 Coin and Medal Nickel set. The key is getting them up for sale quick. Take a look at the auction history for the 2005 Coin and Medal Nickel sets. The price is dropping like a stone. Timing is everything with this kind of item.
They must have got more in. As of this post the sets are backordered but still avail. Just ordered a few.
A friend was writing on the WINS list and said that he went to a coin auction and prices were real high...some collectors were talking about how they should be selling and not buying....isn't this the same thing that happened in the 70's and 80's??...(I wasn't here back then ;--) ) when prices go soo high and sets start selling out fast (no telling how many of these sets are back in a box at the mint somewhere) many collectors all want to sell...so they do...and when all of these collectors start to sell...that is when everyone will find out what happens when the market falls.! Sorry guys...I just don't think the mint has run out of these sets...there are still more somewhere I bet. Speedy
First and foremost, I bought one of these sets for myself because I like it. Even though I'm a former army brat, the military in general is a soft spot for me. That being said, I bought 2 more in hopes I can end up with a set basically for free. Time will tell, but I'm still holding my previously posted views that this set is different strictly b/c of the subject and associated community. If I'm wrong, oh well....I've got good gift material, but I don't think I will be.
Speedy, you are right. This morning, none were available, now they are selling them again. Does anyone have experience with this on again/off again selling? Are they getting cancellations or did they say they were not available until they could catch up from the "opening day" fiasco they had?
I forget who pointed it out, but shipping dates and availabilities are posted by a computer script run daily. Not a wise way to inform your customers, but that's how the mint is doing it. Your better off calling their sales reps directly and not trusting the info posted on the website.
I purchased two of the coin and stamp sets, one for me and one for my brothers christmas present... If the order went through i will be getting one right? i won;t have my order cancelled? that would really make me mad! any one ever have the mint cancel an order on you?
lawdogct, You are playing the game I played for years and it works most of the time. Nothing better than keeping a free set or a free coin ANY TIME! I just got burned out on trying to keep up with the offerings and sets do take space so I had to literally force myself to quit! I am chomp'in the bit right now so I hope they do sell out quickly before I have a relapse!
Ranchhand, I have been buying from the Mint for over 10 years, and I have never had an order cancelled, but I have certainly read about orders being unfilled for various reasons. If you have an order number and order early, I am sure you will get your sets. That doesn't mean you won't have some anxious moments waiting though!
Not me personally Ranchhand but I know many people that had the 2004 medal sets ordered just to have them cancelled at the last minute. I never count on getting my stuff until I get the "shipping confirmation" email from the mint. This usually only applies to special sets, regular annual issues usually are no problem. As for selling my Marine sets...NO WAY!! I bought 2 for my collection and a few for gifts. So far my record is intact. 20+ years of collecting and I have never sold a coin from my collection. Given a few away, yes but never sold any!
Oh, ranchhand, I hate to say it but they can and do cancel orders. I usually only "feel" comfortable about receiving my order once I see the transaction hit my bank account (since I use a debit card to order). Until then, it's anyone's guess. Even if the web site says your order in in process, that's no guarantee. Wish I had more hope for you but that's the history for many customers of the Mint.
Hey Guys..it seems that with 600K total coins for all options that they will have plenty to go around...you can still order from the website..I just checked..now if it were limited to say 50,000 coins..well my brothers..it would be gone and going through the roof!! As a former Marine.. I did get the entire series..and one for Chestie Puller, and one for the Battle at Chapulta Peck! Sgt. R.Bradley 1972-1975 USMC MOS 0311
A few weeks ago I advised an ex-Marine friend of mine about the commemoratives. He's not a collector, and I didn't hear from him, so I assumed he wasn't interested. A couple days ago I received an email stating that he had bought two of them.
I ordered 5 coin and medal set's on the 25th...I got 3 in one mailing and 2 used set's in the 2nd mailing!???????????????????????????
I had my entire 2004 order cancelled at the last minute. "sorry we regret to inform you that the 2004 nickel and medal set is no longer available"Along with my proof and mint sets which never came. This year i ordered 3 Nickel and Medal sets on the 27 of May. Guess what, still havent recieved them. I recieved an email a few day ago that thay were backordered until sept. 15. I was on the phone early on july 20th, and bought multiples of all the new sets and all were backordered. So , I'll believe it when i see it. In the mid 80's , istarted buying proof and mint sets. Well i only recieved one order out of five. I only recieved credit for one of the four i didnt recieve. Which made me quit collecting AGAIN!!!!!! So now-a-days i dont Expect any thing.... CLAW
