Yes, I am bragging. With the 1793 half cent (F), I now have 101 of the 102 coins needed for my Type Set (non-gold). I only lack the Small Eagle Half as do 99% of collectors. Our house burned down three years ago and in my fireproof safe I found my old Whirman album with the uncirculated Barbers I got as a kid. I had ten BU Trade dollars from an uncle including an 1878-CC that I traded for my Chain Cent. I decided to finish the collection and began studying, visiting coin shows, estates, various dealers I traded all but one of the dollars for other coins. I made mistakes like impulse buying, low quality coins, deals "too good to be true". About half is slabbed and with three XF exceptions, everything past 1800 is MS50+. A few of my favorites: 1794 Large Cent (MS50), 1837 No Stars Dime (MS63), 1839 No Drapery Half (MS53), 1862 Indian cent (MS66), 1869 3 cent copper (MS67), 1921 High Relief Peace (MS65) and of course all the gorgeous 18th century coins - my favorites! Unfortunately my teenage sons could care less about coins (except spending them). The collection is insured; I am NOT going to lock them in a bank vault out of sight. So gang, how do I display them? I have some ideas...there is a long, narrow room on the bottom floor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. smb12321
Congratualtions! Suggestions for display would be in frames. You could group them by denomination... or single out a few of the the plums and do a couple of paragraphs about them and have the whole thing professionally framed. This is something that DEFINITELY cries out to be shown to friends. A word of warning though. Make sure that the room is not visible to casual visitors like salemen, and repairmen. You definitely don't want to lose this to theft. Now you GOTTA get started on the gold. What a challenge.
Congrats! I'm working on a Dansco 7070 type set but still have a looonngg way to go. Please post some pics, we'd love to see your goodies. As for how to display them, hmmmm. I've looked into this site for displaying 1 or 2 slabbed coins, but from what I hear you can work with them and they can do some nice custom designs. For the pieces that aren't slabbed, you can put them in these Amos Advantage holders. Then they'd all be 'slabbed' and the same size to display, mount, etc. Whatever you decide, good luck and PLEASE keep us posted. We've love to see pics of your finished project.
Coin Wench - Thanks and good luck on your Dansco set. Is yours a special type - gold, first year of issue, toned, rare, etc? Does it include "No Stars", "No Drape", "Rays", etc? I'm showing my age when the Whitman album I use with the 18th century coins has been out of print for a long time. For me, the most exciting - but alas, the most expensive - phase was gathering those early issues. I've thought about a long glass-enclosed lighted dispaly case, mounted to the wall with three stainless steel levels Two stainless steel rods would be fixed down the middle of each level, just wide enough to hold a vertical slab. If a mirror was behind, you could see the reverse also. I also have considered a glossy black surface. Three levels would hold 34 coins each. Oh well, it's yet another plan amid all my other projects. I do have a web site featuring the entire collection but am in the process of updating it and switching hosts. I'll let you know when it is back up and running. smb12321
Thanks a lot. The room is internal, almost a hidden chamber I had built after the fire. I've considered gold and think a minimum of $150,000 would be required. However I doubt I could ever complete it if I counted the Stella as a design rather than a pattern. I've considered patterns, a subject I've been interested in for some time. Many are stunning and deserve recognition. As I said, my web site is in the process of updating and changing hosts - it is quite extensive with history, description, blah blah and even a "quiz" for the visitor. I'll let you know when it is back up and running. smb12321
Stellas were patterns IMO....they only made 10 of most of them...only 1 date (I think I'm right) had more than 10 minted. Speedy
