Here is Christian Gobrecht's original design with No Stars on the Obverse. And here is one from some years later. Robert Ball Hughes, who re-did the artwork, took a lot of beauty out of the design.
I love the no stars dime and half dime. The Gobrecht dollars without obverse stars are some of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever in my opinion. Too bad they are so rare and expensive.
Not THAT rare ... just expensive. Next to the cut-out Gobrecht eagle from a dollar that I saw on-line years ago, the worst Gobrecht Dollar I have seen was holed with acid damage on the the obverse. I actually bid $400 on it during my desperate days in my 20s, but thank goodness did not get it.
1891 toned au55 recent purchase. Sellers pictures. I can't get good ones yet because there are light scratches on the holder. I'm fixing that later today!
Nice 1853 No Arrows @messydesk. There were only 95,000 of these minted before they switched the dies over to the With Arrows variety of 1853. I picked this one up from Gerry Fortin. It is the plate coin from Kamal Ahwash's book on LS dimes. Ahwash lists it as R-6. Do you think it still is R-6?
