Okay, I'm a VERY casual coin collector. I like sorting through my change to find the recently minted coins, like the Statehood Quarters, the Presidential Dollars, and now I'm working on "Jefferson Nickels 1997+ Volume Three" (because of the new keelboat, bison, ocean, etc pictures). My new Jefferson Nickel folder takes both D and P minted coins. I'm finding that the "P" coins don't make it out to California much! I assume East Coast collectors aren't seeing many "D" coins. How do other casual collectors deal with this? I can think of the following: (1) travel to the east coast and buy a lot of rolls and go through them; (2) purchase specific coins (not really what I want to get into); or (3) setup pen-pal/trade with someone on the east coast who will trade P's for D's. I recommend the pen pal setup. It allows you to get to know other collectors and obtain your needs without much money being involved. Or just get as many rolls as you can get your hands on. You will find them...
The Jefferson nickel collection can be a fun one to put together. You can make it... like most collections what ever you want it to be. From 1938 to date with all types and Varities MS & Proof s or just filling a Whitman nickel book up. As a right coaster "East Coast" we always had a problem getting not so much D Mint marks but the S mint marks. I believe you are looking for and I may be wrong is just filling up a Whitman nickel folder. If this is the case it's not that costly. You can pick up most for under a dollar many cheaper in MS. The proofs will cost more but nothing crazy. Unless you choose to expand your collection to types & varieties. IE the 1997 p matte finish Jefferson only 25,000 minted in MS-66 price $250.00 You may wish to pick up the Whitman Red Book a guide book of Buffalo & Jefferson Nickels A must for the Jefferson Collector. Thanks a lot for the info about the buddy system on the Open Forum. I found one or two that look promising and emailed them offline. I'm mostly interested in people who are casual, like me, not trying to run a business. I'll post myself if I don't hear back. Regarding the S-Mint coins. I don't see many of those either, even though I live close to San Franciso. Didn't it stop minting regular circulation coins 30 years ago?
yes it's true they are all now proof coins minted in San Fran. however when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's collecting coins we here on the east coast could only get P & D mint marks.... if you found an S mint mark in change it was like Christmas no kidding... I'm not sure any more how the gov. or mint distributes coins as now a days....it depends on the banks requesting coin. Try going into a bank and asking for rolls of half dollars... most here on the east coast won't have any to sell you. Paddy
I have a couple of people here on this very forum whom I trade with. It is a great way to get coins at face, plus postage.
