Another USPS "Success" Story

I won a 1796 Draped Bust dollar in Heritage's auction of Jan.22 so I sent in my personal check on Jan 25th. Transit was Florida to Texas, so no international issues. After a week, it had still not cleared the bank and Heritage had not received it. Called Heritage, discussed the late delivery, and I said we'd give the check another week to get there. At the end of the second week, which was yesterday, the check had still not cleared the bank and still not received by Heritage. So, I had to put a "stop payment" on the check, called Heritage and paid by credit card. They were nice enough to waive the late fee but the 2.5% credit card fee they charge kinda hurt. Guess I'll need to look into wire transfers, now.

Anyway, the USPS strikes again. The Heritage customer rep told me they are seeing lots of delays due to this. And I read a story in the WSJ last week that reported the USPS on-time delivery of first class mail is down to 60% from a pre-pandemic norm of about 90%.

I am also seeing many more cases of mis-delivered mail.

This incident was the second time within 12 months that a large check failed to make its destination with no sign yet that either check was stolen with an attempt at fraudulent redemption. So what happens to this stuff - sitting in someone's rental storage locker?

It is sitting in a postal truck trailer or storage facility somewhere. I won an auction back in December, promptly sent cheque to auction house, it took two weeks to get there. Then they sent my auction win right away but it took a month from when it was sent to get to my address.

I would have put a stop payment on the cheque and paid electronically - they do that e-check thing on Heritage. There isn't much option on sending though, you may still wait awhile.

I think it is more than the pandemic. I read a recent report that the facility in Philadelphia still has Christmas packages and that they are not handling items as first in / first out. Will take a while to sort it all out.

it's sitting with my bills apparently. I talk to my postal carriers, they all have mail out on their delivery trucks that doesn't even belong to this state, not freshly collected, but put on their trucks so they can return it at the end of the day to the post office to then be made to disappear again and again until it finally gets to where it's going by pure dumb luck or someone finally doing the job right.

No over time, no extra trips to deliver mail either, meaning if they missed a mail box because it's out of order and a house in the middle of the block was at the end of the pile, they either stick it in someones mail box and it gets delayed in returns, or they return it to the post office and it gets delayed to be resorted and another delivery attempt made. anything that doesn't belong on their truck route needs to be returned to the post office on their own time after the shift ends. Which they do, but it just gets reloaded back on their truck again the next day because everyone's not going the extra mile and following the "no extra time" rules.

I'm in florida, my postal carrier showed me a bundle of mail that supposed to go to New York and they keep sticking it on her truck for her delivery route day after day.

The truth is, if it got hung up in a warehouse it's going to be there a long time they would need to hire additional workers to clear backlogs, the regular workers are handling the current operations.
But the practice is to keep it moving, even if it's moving in the wrong direction because at least it's not backing up and has a shot at being delivered to the correct recipient.

Surprisingly I would say the past 2 weeks things have been back to "normal" for me & the USPS. I sold several things recently, priority mail, and they arrived on time. Not the typical 10 or more day slike before.

Things I have bought have arrived within 3-5 days as well.

And this is L.A. mind you.

I still have an item I bought in Dec. from Germany that still hasn't left the "Origin post" phase. I have stopped buying overseas since. Canada I have no issues with.

Dad sent us a Christmas card with checks, MD to NC, maybe 350 miles. He put it in the mail on Dec 18, I think. We received it 30 days later. I think it got routed to Baltimore and spent most of the time there.

My wife sent a package to our friends in Calgary, Canada two weeks before Thanksgiving through the Post Office. Custom forms were filled out and all was well. After two weeks, my wife called our friends to see if it got there yet, nope. We went back to the Post Office and talked to the clerk. He did some checking with the sales slip we had. "It is in route" he said. Two weeks later, not there yet. The following week we went back to the Post Office, still in route. Christmas came and went, no package. I was about ready to give up. We went back to the Post Office and asked once more. This time the clerk did a through trace on the package. Twenty minutes later he came out with a computer print out and showed us. He said he could get in trouble for showing us the print out. The package, some how went from Santa Rosa, CA. to San Francisco, some how wound up in Sal Palo, Brazil. It was then re routed to Miami, Florida. Then to Kanas City, back to San Francisco. It sat a week in SF and was now heading to Toronto, Canada. It arrived on January 31st of this year. Yeah Team! Maybe your check went the way of our package.

It‘s winter, who wouldn’t rather go to São Paolo instead of Calgary? :)

I bought some currency from a Florida dealer which he mailed to me (with tracking) on January 4 (I'm in Maryland).
Tracking showed no activity after January 8.
    I checked periodically.
I was going to contact him for a refund today, but said to myself, 'Self, check tracking once more'.
It has arrived today at a local distribution center.

But if I don't get it tomorrow it will probably not show up until Tuesday at the earliest.
We've got bad weather, the weekend and Presidents' Day all coming.
