I love how each strike indicates it's original weight.

Here’s a new arrival — a Karl Goetz World War I-era medal called “The Treaty of September 1914.” Britain, France and Russia agreed not to sign separate peace agreements with Germany. Lots of typical sarcasm from the German Goetz.

His works are a little to dark for my liking.

Wow, I really like your 1873 w/arrows half. That is exactly the coin and quality I'm seeking for my type set. What was the grade on it? I would be really interested in what you paid for it, if you don't mind. PM me if you like.

Dark they are, for sure. For me, it’s interesting how a German viewed World War I and events stemming from that war.

Might end up making a thread about this coin. I paid strong MS63 money for it, cracked it out and treated it with acetone. It took about 5 minutes, but the lacquer melted away leaving an incredible coin. I just mailed it to NGC. I’m 99% sure it is a business strike. And it’s nearly DMPL.

Makes me wonder why PCGS and the submitter didn't agree to conserve the coin at the time of original submission. Was PCGS not offering any such services at the time this was submitted?

Anyway, good luck with the resubmission. It looks like it will come out lovely.

PCGS didn’t offer conservation at the time. I suspect the sad submitter just held on to this for a decade or so (older holder), and then parted with it on eBay. The coin came out spectacularly. I was afraid to even touch it after removing the lacquer, so I didn’t even photograph it. Just dropped it into a flip and mailed it off. I have dreams that this will end up in a wacky +*PL holder. Both sides are covered in heavy die polish lines and it is 100% prooflike.
Edit to add: I found the NGC census and saw the PCGS census. There are zero PL of this date. I think I have the first.

@physics-fan3.14 is there a way to see if there’s a pop in PL for this coin?

edit: I found the answer. There are no PL of this date.

I've nearly completed a low-grade short set (1904-15) of Barber Halves with this 1904-S, PCGS VG-10.
