been looking for a good crown for a while I like big old silver coins I have a peace, morgan, trade and seated liberty dollar now I'm moving on to world coins seller made me an offer of $47 does it look normal-circulated?not cleaned or diped e.t.c
Well my 2004 world coin catalog shows grade/values for this coin... F-$13.50 VF-$27.50 XF-$80.00 UNC-$160.00 .925 silver weight-28.2759g. or .8409oz. Hard to tell what this coins grade is ??? F-VF ? Wait for someone that collects Great Britain to tell you more on grade and value...
IMO the price guide doesn't look right. They show the same price in circulated grades for a coin with a mintage of 173,000 and 1,807,000. You'd think the lower mintage coin would be worth more.
A comment from Blighty (UK). It's a common coin over here, quite worn, I would grade it as Fine, and possibly a tad more expensive than you would pay over here (and always concider postage). Certainly not cleaned or dipped, a bit of thumbing would tart it up. But why do you collect coins? If they represent tangiable history then maybe you just want the coin to look pretty. There are 3 common types of Victoria crown, and the ultra expensive 'Gothic' one. My 'Old Head' crown.
The cheapest buy it now i could find was this for $50 and im watching a couple of auctions none have sold within the $20-$30 mabey your looking at half crowns when I typed it in it gave me results for sold half crowns also set of two's were selling for around $20-$30.
It isn't cleaned or anything, but I wouldn't pay $47 for it. If it were me, I’d wait for an example with better rims and with a veiled head portrait. However, I must say that you'd be hard-pressed to find a circulated example without minor rim damage. Moreover, the Jubilee head crowns are relatively abundant in comparison.
If you are patient you can find a slightly better one at that price. The coin pictured is $27-$38ish. Sold one with reverse damage for $40 yesterday.
I did a search of sold listings for your coin. If you're getting different results, you may be doing the search wrong.
Here are reasonably decent examples of the four different Victoria Crowns. The OP coin I think is a little over-priced at $47 - if I needed it to complete a date run I would expect to pay £22 to £25 in that condition.
No, the prices represent retail prices one might expect to pay for a specific coin for that grade. Oftentimes, though, the prices listed are higher than what one ends up paying, although not always- as some coin pricings are undervalued. And as another poster mentioned, the prices sometimes are wonky when it comes to mintage numbers/values. NGC/Krause catalogue online is a useful reference, but like the Redbook, the values are not always realistic.
