I've been working to fill the last few holes in my 7070. I accidentally picked up two 1834 Bust half dollars. I only meant to purchase one of them. Just got a bit carried away I suppose. I am going to list this one since it's the lower grade of the two I picked up. (not sure where yet, here or EBay). I wanted to get your input on it. Seems to me to be an honest worn coin. I don't see anything that indicates harsh cleaning or anything like that. What is your thought on this coin? What grade would you give it? Could this be a VG? Or is it better? 1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar - Obverse by BostonCoins posted Feb 8, 2021 at 10:43 AM 1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar - Reverse by BostonCoins posted Feb 8, 2021 at 10:43 AM
Reasonably nice VG Small Date, Small Letters O-116. Quite possibly the most common die marriage for the year.
I am in the cleaned camp. Maybe it looks different in hand, but it appears cleaned to me. Not harshly, but it just has that light clean look.
They've all been cleaned at some time...rare to find a circ. that's not...Would be dark and ugly if not for some kind of cleaning...light cleanings usually don't matter, but if heavily cleaned, then a details grade will happen.
It's a VG. Would be a F 12 if those letters weren't rubbed off. I'm working on these right now as well. I'm really trying to stay Fine or higher. I found this one 2 days ago in the corner of a display at a antique mall in Florida. I had a few minutes on my way to Ft. Myers and did a u turn when I saw the shop. I don't think it's gonna make my favorites list....but look what I paid for it.
