Looks like it would be brown, no red that I can see. The toning seems NT and the reverse with the wood grain has much more eye appeal, to me, than the obverse.
Razz I agree with your assessment of this specimen as I yield to your knowledge of the series. I am not a collector of this series so to speak, coppers have never been a strong interest for my collection. However I learned many years ago how to grade coins and what to look for as signs of wear. The wear on the cheek is the first thing that caught my eye, also on the wheat on the reverse. The rim dings . There's no doupt this coin was hammered nice strike, however to my eye the coin has been cleaned retoned or has had damage and someone tried to disguise. My post is to call out those who give wrong information on a subject they know little or none. To those who came off with MS assessments why dont you put up the money to send this specimen in and have graded? Giving a member hope of the coin reaching an impossible grade, and that person spending good money only to have the specimen come back as a detailed Au is just WRONG! Allowing them to believe that a nice $5 coin is worth spending $50 to have graded is wrong! I agree with your call and only like to hear your assessment of what is going on in the obv. Fields as well behinde the neck. Thanks in advance Paddy
I am not putting down your coin or you it is a nice hammer strike. What concerns me is giving advice on a coin that isnt worth slabing I hate for you to believe that spending $50 to slab this coin is a good idea. Then you being so disappointed it spoils your passion for this hobby. I will always be honest from my heart to tell you my feelings, they are for you to decide if im right or wrong. Best regards Paddy.
Thank you. It has many features, and a 30x zoom, which I hardly use, but, when I need to look at a coin closely, I rely on its zoom qualities. Love Samsung phones!
Paddy54, you aren't putting me down in the least. I'm learning, and that's why I'm here; to learn from you experts. Thank you!
I only wish I could say the same....I have two nikons a point and shoot that is now out of service and a SLD that doenot have the correct lens to shoot coins. I dont have the $ now to buy the macro lens needed. But again your images are clear and great color. Keep up the good work,
LOL Im no expert..even in the field I am a expert in ...I learn something new daily! What I am is someone who is willing to be honest and share what I do know, and willing to help another find the answers they seek.... we all are human we all make mistakes.... and all have room for improvement in every thing in life.
Thank you...as your post has given everyone food for thought! And again hopefully help someone else .
I got lucky with this phone. My husband and are the type to hang on to phones for a few years, and I bought this phone from the Verizon shop in Costco, that was blowing these out for $300, so I gave my husband my older Samsung, which was an upgrade for him.
I think you are spot in regarding the obverse. That splotchy and uneven toning could actually be cover up. Acetone or xylene might reveal what is under, but it is likely not going to be a very good outcome. Either way this a max $5 retail coin. Good for a hole filler and good learning example to see what is under the toning. I still have a way to go on this series, I consider myself at an intermediate level and am not an expert.
