I have just found this coin in a collection i just bought. It appears to be a 1939D rpm. The repunch is south, and i believe i have matched it up to be the CONECA rpm 3 for the year. OK...I know its a corroded and ugly XF/AU detail coin, but i am hoping that someone more knowledgable than I am could take a look and maybe confirm...While examining it, i also noted what may be obv doubling as well...it appears strongest on WE with an east double showing on the right upright of the W and the upper crossbar of the E. the O and D of GOD also show minor doubling. The DDO i am less sure of than the RPM, but thought id have you take a look anyway. Thanks for your time.
It looks like it could be a 1939D-1MM-003. As far as the other stuff I can't tell. And Welcome:hail:to the forum.
Take a toothpick and clean out the MM. Just don't push to hard. I usually do this and then use a soft bristle brush to brush off the excess. Then Use a soft-cloth(or sock turn inside out), and clean the rest off. Then give us some different pics.
Further advice helped Thank you jessash1976 for your advice. I didnt like the idea of "cleaning the mint mark", but I spoke with a local dealer who showed me how to soak a toothpick in hot water for about 5 min, crush the tip to turn the pick into almost a brush. As you said, I VERY gently brushed into the crevices with the "brush" dipped in distilled water. The enclosed photo shows what appeared. Take a look and see if it changes anyones mind
Well now that all that stuff is gone a possible RPM you would never tell for sure by a pic if that was a RPM for sure, with all that junk on it without removing it, just commen sence the junk made it very deceptive Joe
Definitely looks like an RPM. I don't think its MDD because I don't see anything on the date. I'm not so sure about the DDO. There are none listed for 1939D, but that doesn't mean there aren't any to be found.
Yea, That's a lot better now. To me I think it just has Machine doubling on the MM. I don't think it would be on the date because dates were punched separately I think.
Huh? If it was machine doubling there would be doubling evident on date. Regardless of whether the date was punched into the die seperately or not, MDDs are created after the finished die is put into the press. The dies were created in Philadelphia complete with obverse and reverse then shipped to the other mints for them to add the MM...I think...anyone else agree?
I guess I don't remember the whole process, but going by what you just said, it would still be possible for the MM to be MD independently because like you said, the OBV and REV are already in place before the MM. So, what is the next process. From what limited knowledge I have, I think MM were added to the die starting in 1990.
???? Machine doubling is a striking effect - it occurs as the dies are separating after the coin is struck. The mintmark was definitely part of the die. What you are thinking of is after 1990, the mintmark was no longer hand punched into the die, eliminating RPMs.
Ahhhhhh, I guess I learn something every day. Thanks. I always envisioned someone striking it by hand on each coin. Maybe that's the old way, I don't know.
