    Hi,
yesterday was a lucky day, was pleasantly surprised when my wife got me these 2 2009 Brass 5 Rs coins (Bombay Mint). They are the same size as the regular cu-ni 5 rs but are half the width/thickness. the edges are milled/reeded.

Best part is, got these as change in a super market and didnt have worry about mint/postage etc etc :hail: when i didnt even know that these new coins exist. I have yet to get the bimetallic 10rs coin but these were a big big bonus :smile
    Here are the pics

yep they do :D.. it also means that its time to save on the stainless steel 5 rs coins (wavey waters)... pple (rightly) complain that coin is very similar to 50p stainless steel coin and probably the reason for the new design/metal and the stainless steel 5rs coin could possibly be phased out..
wonder how a commemorative design would like on this metal...:kewl:... the last time brass (or its combination) was used in indian coins was the 20p in 1971?

couldnt sleep last night:hatch:.. all excited about posting the pics :D... first time i ever had a coin so quickly after it was released... usually takes some time for the coin to come in circulation (an e.g. is the 10rs bimetallic)

They look in great condition too, especially for being found in circulation. Probably didn't get far. Congrats! Nice Coins.

I hope people do not melt them thinking they are gold or for use in jewelery as they did for the older 20p coins. :)

How disappointed they will be some time in the future, when they´re in need of money :p

That's so true and hilarious......But this fact only applies for the 20 paise FAO circulating commemorative coin (km#43). My Pop told me that a rumor went out that those coins contained traces of gold and suddenly people started to hoard those coins like mad. Probably the reason why brass/bronze coins were last minted in 1970/71. Some of these coins that I got in childhood got stolen. The mint gotta teach people that all that glitters is not gold.:goofer:

Hey Mumba....Nice strike for a modern coin. My Calcutta mint is minting rubbish stuff. Just look at the strike of this AU coin.

The coin is not as bad as it looks in the pic....that just my junk scanner...but the stike of all the UNC coins I got are really poor. Nowhere as sharp as Bombay mint.

No, not back yet...few more days :) Which 09 cents are u talking about? the second one? or log cabin? I got some extra log cabins in my roll searching...the other one i just got 1P and 1D...haven't seen any in rolls yet. It would be great if I were to find 09 nickels or dimes before I leave...you never know when u get lucky..keeping my fingers crossed.

Btw, when I'm back and start looking into Indian coins, I will probably need some pointers from you! I'm starting with a clean slate :)

.. i bet even louis braille would be aghast with that price.... wonder whether he suddenly opened his eyes and rubbed them in astonishment.....
i think i will just wait for louis till he turns up for me at some place... i am kinda stingy person and with age i am now slowly (hopefully) gaining that valuable thing called patience :eek:hya:

gee i miss him... common dude show the departed king some respect :crying:

    Mumbapuri,

Being a newbie collector, I have a question that might seem silly.

You said the 5 Rupee coin was a Bombay mint. How do you distinguish between a Bombay Mint and Calcutta Mint?

    thanks
